save money on oil change vs. dealership

I had scheduled an oil change on my 2006 330I at a dealership and was quoted a cost of $225! Naturally I was alarmed at the cost, so I requested a email with the services I would be receiving with a$225 oil change. All I got was $145 for oil change and $75 for a "standard scope". After doing my own research, I found out that the scope is nothing more than checking for fault codes and resetting the oil life indicator! Didn't seem worth the cost to me so I looked up the reset procedure myself! Super easy! plus my car allready has a computer that will tell me if it is throwing any codes. I carried the car to my local express shop and had then perform the work. They used 530w mobile 1 synthetic ( same company that actually makes the Bmw synthetic) and a new filter. Cost came to $95! So if you wanna save a ton of $ its possible. The shop Is still licenced with insurance so how can you go wrong!!!!! Here Is the reset procedure. Enjoy spending the money saved! Manual Reset Procedure

Step 1 Insert key into slot Step 2 Press start/stop button without depressing clutch/brake and wait for the service reminder to dissapear. Step 3 Immediately after service reminder goes out, press and hold the odometer reset. After 3 secs a warning triangle will appear, keep the odometer button pressed and after another 2-3 secs the Oil can will appear. If you hold it too long (10 secs in total) you will overshoot and some German writing will appear giving the software level/ can bus etc. of the car. Go back to the beginning and start again. Step 4 You are now in the service menu, use the toggle switch on indicator stalk to scroll up/down through the various service items. Step 5 When you have the item you want to reset showing, press the BC button on end of indicator stalk. Reset should now appear in the display. Press in and hold the BC button for 2-3 secs and a clock will start whirling around and then its done. Step 6 You can now either scroll up/down to select another item (as in step 4) or you can press the start/stop button to exit.

The above procedure will NOT work if:-- The remaining percentage is greater than 80%; - The time and date have not been set.

Not to start another oil war , but technically Mobil 1 5w-30 is the wrong oil. Mobil 1 0w-40 is the better choice for next time. I wouldn't worry about it much though this time around (unless you are tracking it, towing or driving very hard).

And since they incorrectly told you that Mobil makes BMW OEM oil, I would stay away from that shop in the future.

If I specify ONLY an oil/filter change, my dealer does it for about $105, or $80 if I wait for one of their coupons. And they put in the correct oil and filter.

I buy the oil and filter from Tischer and do the work myself, comes out to less than $80.

I think mobile 1 from walmart would be the cheapest. Then just order the filter online. Prob come out to about 60 total.

I get it done at the dealership every time. The dealer usually charges $80-90, depending on what special is available. It is not worth it to do it myself to save only $15-$20.

Also, having the service records available to show a potential buyer that routine maintenance including oil changes were always performed = priceless.
