DCT damage

Underneath the car I have noticed an opening in the transmission, just before the engine oil pan where transmission and engine merges. I can actually see the cog of the transmission and corrosion. Wondering what is that and how serious damage is it?

Opening is cast that way, suppose to be there, and you are seeing the teeth on the ring gear. No problem other than your obvious oil leaks.

It's your flywheel. Looks like there is not a cover made for that opening, should be fine if BMW designed it that way.

OP, that opening is in what's called the bellhousing. All bellhousings have at least one hole. Functions:
Inspect flywheel/flexplate teeth
Drain oil leaking from rear main seal
Attach/detach torque converter bolts
Prevent engine from turning when tightening/loosening crank pulley bolt

Oil leak is not a problem, shops got plenty of that stuff I freaked out initially, did not expect from germans such openings, used to them pack everything so tight, tight... well, it is good to know that it is not a damage as the car is fully on me without any warranty

This does seem odd as traditionally such openings have covers or caps. I assume there is at least a splash shield bolted to something covering this?

Youre not worried about the oil leaks because you have plenty of oil to top it up with?
