Fierce Vibration on Motorway - HELP!
Hi everyone,
I was hoping someone could help identify a problem I've been having with my 2005 325i E90. Whilst driving down the motorway (above 50mph) a significant vibration starts. The vibration is not through the steering wheel and pedals but is through the whole car. The vibration does not change with engine RPM or by applying the brakes however does change with speed (so presumably not engine or brake related). The interesting thing is that the vibration will start at a random time whilst cruising down the motorway and if I pull over and stop, it temporally fixes the problem until another random reoccurrence. I just can't understand how a vibrating issue could be random and not always present when driving down the motorway? Any ideas anyone? |

Interesting theory, I hadn't thought of that - I've just been out to have a quick look. The front springs both seem to be ok, seated ok and no visible cracks or breakages. No visible damage to the rears but I can't see too much.
I'm not too sure how to investigate further? |

This is my personal opinion do don't shoot me for saying so.
What you described is what can only occur from WIND only or movement. Enough wind to vibrate a part. A large part, hence why you feel the whole car. Bumper work done recently? Grill work, Under belly pan not put on correctly Or loose wheel or brake job. Or partially seized caliper. Or hood not locked all the way or not aligned. DN |

I had the same problem but vibrated above 60 mph, solution was all my rims had been bent due to crappy new england winter making awful pot holes. Thank god for the BMW rim and tire insurance! Brand new OE tires and rims for 200$!!

Hi guys, thanks for all the proactive replies.
With regards to wheels, balancing and rims - surely the problem would always be aparent if this were the case? I could be cursing at 60mph for 15 mins and it would just start randomly? With regards to control arm bushings - how do I check these? |

How did you get them to pay out on bent rims? I asked and they said they only approved claims where the wheel wouldn't hold air, which is BS.

It can be wheels, sometimes road conditions change and out of balance wheels will vibrate. Check your tire pressure as well, if it's too low, it will make the problem worse. I had a similar issue; vibration over 60 mph and it didn't happen all the time. After a lot of trouble shooting, I noticed that on new highways, it didn't happen much. But on older hwys with grooves, it happened much more. One of my tires was low due a leak and after I fixed that, the vibration was much better. Then I had my wheels/tires rebalanced and that has 90% fixed the problem. I need new rear tires soon, so we'll see if replacing those fixes it 100%.

Making sure we both have the same one, its the one you buy through the dealer when buying the car? And I brought it in and told them that it was shaking around 60, and a vcg as well as the lifters (which now the sound is much worse ) and when I picked it up they said the rep came out and could see visual bends so they replaced them for me no questions asked, didnt even know they were bent at all, I couldnt see the bends but they did so I was happy!

Take your vehicle for a 4 wheel alignment.
But take it to the best shop. Not some new guy with the latest machine. As for rims, Just go to any tire place and ask them to balance each rim. It should not be more than 10 per rim and tires. if they balance them. Alignment place will tell you if need bushings.... If they don't check the bushings, you went to an inexperienced alignment shop. Make sure they check for play, before doing alignment. OP, What I wrote in my last response......was that checked, or what? DN |
