Can't split style 5s.
Picked up a set of Style 5s from a junkyard in good shape but covered with black spray paint. Still working on the first one right now. I removed the bolts, that went well. I flipped it over and sprayed PB blaster around the back edge where the face meets the barrel. Then the fun stuff began! I folded a towel and put a block of wood on the face and beat it with a 3lb blacksmith hammer until the wood split. I just baked it in the oven at 250 degrees for 10 minutes, pulled it out and put a telephone book on the face and beat it with a hammer again—and I'm talking standing up and holding the hammer overhead and bringing my full bodyweight onto this thing. The face will not budge. I'm not really sure what else to do. I've tried every trick I've read online and nothing seems to work. I mean, do I need to get a 10lb sledge and hit these things? I know they're tough but I'm afraid I'll break them, even with the phone book.

So, in case anyone else searches this or has this problem, I finally got them apart. I baked the rim in the oven for 10 minutes at 350 degrees, then put a phonebook on the face of the rim and gave it about a dozen whacks with a 3lb blacksmithing hammer as hard as I could. It finally split.

it also helps to deep clean the wheel first, inside and out. I used a block of wood and a mallet. First whack was center, but I also knocked it off center a bit to the left, then again a little to the right. and again closer to 12 oclock, and again closer to 6 oclock.
Congrats, by the way. How is the build coming along? |
