I would check spark plugs. If their is oil on them then it will most likely be the piston rings. If they are ok then check pcv system if that is ok then most probably the valve stem seals. Thats the way I would attack it.

Thats a lot of work, and sad to see the rings were stuffed after only 150k. Most engines will run far past that point reliably. Stuff like this plus the WG rattle, water pump failures, injector dramas and other crap makes me want to sell and just walk away before I end up broke!
Hope its solid for you now after this. |

Never give up. If you want to add big hp numbers be prepared to rebuild engine and put all forge through before even adding all the mods. Thats what I would do if I had the choice again.

Going all out for forged internals right off the bat is reserved for people who have enough disposable income to do so and those who have a clear goal of chasing the ultimate HP numbers whilst still being "reliable". There aren't many built N54 motors in Australia as well and you're the only one here on the Oz forums, so you're somewhat of a pioneer. As these cars become more popular amongst the modified community, I do hope that more people follow your train of thought. These motors haven't really been pushed to their developmental edge yet, so people don't consider what the boundaries of the stock internals. Unlike say, someone planning an SR20DET build, many will consider forged internals as part of their initial shopping list. Hats off to you for paving the way and looking forward to seeing how far you push your car! |

Agreed. There's many N54's pushing 500whp+, and quite a few over 600, 700 and even 800whp. Reliability wise though, who knows how long they'll hold those kind of numbers. 150,000 kms is a lot, so I agree if someone was starting with that many kms on the car and wanting to put down some big power then yes building the motor, at least with new or low km parts (or finding a low km short block) would be a good idea.
I don't know though. BMW to me is great chassis balance and moderate power so I'm happy with mine stock. It's fun to see others pushing the boundaries though. |

So today called up Pure Performance to see how my forge pistons are coming along and found out by them they actually dont make them here in Melbourne. They are produced in Germany due to the special coating that is applied to them. Thought I would let you guys know incase you ever want to go down this path. The price of the pistons have gone from $1200 to now $1800.. Thank god i got mine ordered when I did. lol
