Hissing noise from shock?

When I go over bumps, I hear a little bit of a hissing noise from the front-left wheel area...

Do you think it could be a busted shock?

I find that the car handles great on smooth roads, but is jittery on rough ones... which makes me think it could be a problem with a shock...

Any advice?

Thanks!

Mine does it too, in certain situations where I can hear it eg windows down goIng uphill over a speedbump in a parking garage. Assume normal.

Same here, left front. I also have an 08 335 xi. I asked the dealer to check it but they said nothing wrong found. I did find a small hole in the rubber boot at the top but I can't tell if that is causing the noise. Mine's been doing it for a while with no ill effects but it's annoying, sounds cheap.

My 328xi does this too, as did my '09 Maxima, pretty sure its just the shocks releasing extra pressure as you go over a substantial bump.

Sounds normal. If you are every wondering about the shocks, just press down (or lift up) one corner at a time. If shocks are screwed, it'll bounce like a ball. If they are good, it damps out the bounce almost instantly.

Normal gas shock noise. If its squeaking that's a different story.

I don't know if this is normal or not...but mainly in the colder seasons when I go over speed bumps ny suspension sounds like a sponge...
this happened to my last e90 and e46 as well so i thought it was normal

anyone ever find a fix for this? (assuming its not normal)

I went from my OEM Struts to ST Coilovers and the sound is still there. same as you guys describe. Since it required reusing the OEM top strut mounts, I assumed that could be where it was coming from. Any suggestions?

Oh wow, glad to know it is normal. My 09 335xi does it sometimes over bumps. My previous 545i did it as well. I always kinda took it as a sign of possible failure coming.

If no one else has mentioned this yet, it's completely normal. This happens across brands and models, not just with BMWs.

I'd concur with this brand new information. It seems normal, I just found out.
