Could I ask, would u not be able to reject what seems to be a very expensive optional extra if it doesn't meet your expectation? and have merc compensate you for having to replace it? £5k is a lot of money for a substandard audio setup?

Mr Nuts,

This has to stop. So I had a rattle, you had a rattle. I get a new car, you get a new car. Now you're trying to get ahead of me with this whole 'my music sounds funny' thing. It's not going to wash because every car dealer in the country now has a picture of you posted up in their staff area. Next to mine. And not even waiting for my replacement to be delivered is just unsportsmanlike. I have a list of faults I intend to find/imagine but at least wait until I've got the bloody car!

Just stop it.

Regards,

Richard.

Thanks

And I would say the bass isn't really that present - once you ask it to be present in a manner that it punches hard, it just farts.

Compared to the Bowers and Wilkins in the Jaguar (and to a lesser extend the HK in the E Class), this B&O just has little depth and virtually no 'punch' that you can feel.

No, but I will be flagging this to the dealer to try if the replacement sub doesn't work.

Does sound odd that B&O are being gagged by Merc. Think if I were B&O I'd be massively questionning my relationship with a company who not only gags me but also doesn't allow me to address issues and therefore damaging the reputation of my company. Sounds odd to me.
Is the BOSE really that good? I ask because the Bose I heard in the GT-R was poor. Saying this, it was poor because it lacked punch but at least it didn't distort. BOSE in Maserati was similar. However, in my Porsche BOSE was pretty good so they can get it right.

Not sure whats next - I absolutely love the car so swapping it for something else, save for another SLS with just the basic HK system, is not an option for me. Chuck some money at it (instead of you ) and get it done in the aftermarket - I've already made first moves down that route as I'm fully expecting it to come back the same as it went in!

Finding a used SLS without B&O is hard because the people that buy new SLS's tend to spec the £5k option because they can afford it and because it's 'the best'. To be honest, I'd probably do the same on the strength of the B&O brand name so I can hardly blame them.

Maybe an option is to really push Mercedes into finding me an example without B&O, but then the rest of my car spec-wise is perfect.

I bet this isn't far from the truth based on conversations I've had with one of their development drivers and how they can easily ignore good recommendations.

Yep, this is 100% proof that spending this kind of money doesn't always buy the best. Is there actually a more expensive optional car audio system out there than the £5.1k of this B&O one?

The 'free' Bowers and Wilkins in the Jaguar is in another league, as are all the HK systems I've had, BMW's Individual etc etc.

Hard to reject an integral part of the car, unless I reject the whole car which i don't want to do.

Yes, I could maybe shoot for some money back but it's only good if I can utilise that money to get a system that works to my satisfaction. Getting a refund and living with a sub standard system is not the outcome I want.

Andrew, I think the BOSE in the Zed is great, on a par with the Logic 7 DSP jobby I had in my E92 I think. No distortion at any volume and very powerful (a huge step-up from the 350Z). Not heard the GT-R'sters version but heard a lot of complaints. I can comment on how it compares to the £5k 'mega-systems' in some of your recent motors but I've been very pleased with it. Perhaps the size of my cabin helps, maybe even the canvas roof, no idea but it sounds the bollocks. We'll have to sort out a 'sound-off' . Perhaps swap cars for a week to really test the systems .

Do you seriously expect a Merc dealer to understanding phasing of car audio ......... expect very blank faces when you mention that one !!!

The BOSE in the 350z was utter shite. Really really flat. A bit of bass and pretty loud but it just sounded like everything was being remastered down to 92kbps or something. Like listening to an audio casette!

I have also heard it in several Audi's and found it equally as shite.

I think comparing BOSE to a B&O system is something that would only be done by someone either biased, or that hasn't heard a B&O system.

Andrew's B&O being a possible exception as it's got problems at present of course.

In my experiences within 6 or 7 cars: Bose is alot better than bone standard but alot worse than almost any aftermarket setup or any reputable hifi maker.

If I compare say an Audi TT (Circa 2010) with an E92: I'd put the Bose on terms with the alpine upgrade perhaps, but not as good as HK and nowhere NEAR individual (which still only costs half of the B&O system in Andrew's car.)

Ah, I see you said it's much much better than the 350. I 'ruddy well hope so. As I said it was total pants. But I think it's still fair to make the rest of the comparisons I did. I've heard it in GT-R, TT, A4, and at least one or two other cars. Never sounded particularly special. Better than stock, "nice" for a casual listener probably. But not worth spending money on rather than just getting a proper system sorted ones' self. IMHO!!!

I've never been impressed with any Bose system. They always sound muffled. HK is in another league.

I had a tiny bit of progress with the subwoofer problem today.

After getting that curt initial response from B&O, I sent them a further email questioning whether they really were happy to wash their hands of the problem or whether they may see it appropriate to escalate this through to AMG HQ on my behalf. Their response at this point was spot on and this appears to have kickstarted them into action.

B&O's AMG development guy got in touch with his contact at AMG in Affalterbach and I got a response asking me to get my dealer to contact a specific person at the factory 'before they start dismantling the car to remove the sub'. I think they know something!....and it ain't something that needs a new sub to fix it.

Dealer and factory are now in contact and lets see how this develops. I may get it fixed yet

It would have been easy to give up after that first response but, well, that just isn't my style.

Cheers mate, been busy with the new house, have managed to acquire 2 horses, cat and fish to accompany the dog. Oh and a 3 cylinder tractor with about 30bhp! Runs on red diesel though

Managed to get snowed in for 10 days with the last snowfall, need to sell the Golf and buy a 4x4, don't get me started on the cost of heating oil.

All well though and enjoying being a grumpy hermit

Good to hear selling your AMG has got you the idillic life in the country with your young lass.

Can't imagine it was "that bad" being snowed in with a pretty young lady and some animals.

She is not as young as you seem to think being 35! However as I am 43 she is younger than I deserve. After 10 days both working from home we were ready for killing each other, never been so glad to go to the London office for two days.

Hope you are well mate.

good to see you post here - we were just saying the other day how some people seem to have moved on. Like Andrew buying his way through 80% of the luxury automotive market.

Ha ha, thoughts the same, welcome back Jon. Glad you're making progess Andrew - bet AMG have a photo on their wall with darts hanging off it .

Dave, don't panic I'm not comparing BOSE with B&O, don't think there is any comparison, just saying that my BOSE systems has impressed me (my only real experience of upgraded systems being 3x 350Z's with BOSE, E92 with Professional DSP (then renamed Logic) and now the 370Z's BOSE). Individual is a long way cheaper than Andrew's B&O too, isn't it more like £1,500, as opposed to £5k.

Oh, OT Andrew, but I'm taking Stillen to task on my rusty exhaust, you'd be proud of my e-mails mate - clocking on for 6 months battle now - new photos just e-mailed over & independent specialist report too .

Good man....keep the pressure up

I was talking to a colleague today about my antics and I asked if he thought I was a 'difficult' customer (in my job, I see many difficult but also unreasonable customers...as well as genuine people where things have gone wrong and we just need to fix them). After he spat his tea out, he said I wasn't 'difficult' (as I'm generally extremely polite with my demands) but my standards and expectations are simply on a different level My email back to B&O was, if I say so myself, a masterclass In one swoop, they jumped to action. Given things are 'in progress', it's probably best not to post it up

BTW, BMW Individual was very good but, IMO, nothing so far touches Jaguars' Bowers & Wilkins. Except maybe Jaguars newest partner, Meridian, which I heard in the XJ and was almost too good for what the structure of the car and it's trim could cope with. Exceptional sound system.

I dont think you are being difficult or unreasonable at all. This is not a £40K BMW car you are talking about here. Your car is completely on another level - so the service you get should match that IMO. Dont settle for second best and a half working system, keep pushing them.

Stunning acquisition and very well done The colour combination is lovely. I have played the online configuration game with these before

Enjoy it and don't let the sound system issue put you off. I think you're on the path to having the issue resolved , its amazing how you often manage to befriend folks at AMG.
