Sign disclaimer to fit Falken 452....
Ok the time has come to ditch the Bridgestone runflats.
Ordered 4 x Falken 452s but the tyre dealer is making me sign a disclaimer! He says that BMWs are set up for RFTs (toe angle etc). I have read this before on here - but signing a disclaimer??? This seems odd as the amount of forum members who rave about the improved ride and handling since switching. Got a good price though for 4 x 18s - £445 all in.

disclaimer reads -
The undersigned agree's to not Thank us personally for the improved handling and improved road going effect these tyres may have. As these tyres are not BMW OEM recommended tyres, we can not condone the improvement to your wallet and the joy of your car. |

Let me guess. This is Camskill and you phoned them.
The guy that works there is such a tit. Just order online so you don't have to speak to anyone.

I think they are just covering there own backs should anything worse happen. When I decided to ditch the RFT, one of the tyre places I went to refused to even give me a quote and then eventually they did provided I sign a disclaimer on fitting the non RFT as BMW set my car up to run on RFT blahh blahh etc
the price was ok (on Kumho KU39) not the cheapest but middle of the range. Upon speaking further the garage took no responsibility what so ever upon signing the disclaimer and me having the tyres fitted. At that time I thought sod it I will go elsehwere and glad I did - went with event tyres and when I spoke to the guy he said most owners with RFT have ditched them and he has had no issues the bull **** garages give you about not wanting to fit non rft tyres are not worth my business. The question that I asked at one garage was why does some cars come with non rft and he did not have answer for that |

Nanny state + compensation culture = everyone scared of everything, even something as minor as fitting a tyre.
As has been said, they are just covering their backs, I doubt that you will kill yourself on a 452 unless you were likely to kill yourself on an RFT tyre in the same situation (well, unless we are talking about a high speed blowout which is exactly what RFT's are designed to prevent ) If BMW designed the car around RFT's, they clearly made many many compromises such as handling, road noise and comfort as well as protection afforded to alloy!! Normal tyres may sacrifice the convenience and safety in a blowout that RFT's give, but the trade off is to undo the compromises that BMW accepted when they fitted the RFT's in the first place! Tell the tyre Nazi's BMW ain't infallible when it comes to engineering, 100% of foum members can't be wrong! |

Makes no sense.
If they are saying they are 'dangerous' or 'not fit for purpose', then if they fit them on a road car they are braking the law as they have a 'duty of care' in what they sell / supply. No one can knowingly sell or supply something think may be dangerous or unfit for purpose, especially if a hazard to the public existed. Road tyres would rank VERY highly in this category. A disclaimer doesn't exempt them from their responsibilites in law, if they think it does then they are more stupid than they appear. .....In fact, them making you sign a disclaimer would drop them in the shit even more if there was an incident, as there is no way say they "didn't know about that guv" |

Its ridiculous.
You can ask BMW to supply any of their cars new without RFT's. Alpina don't use RFT's I don't belive the ///M range use RFT's either. (??) |

The most worrying thing about this whole scenario for me is that this is what these people do for a living and they are clueless.
Let's be honest - we're geeks; in the nicest possible sense, obviously, but we are geeks by virtue of the level of interest/detail we go into about learning about our cars. I'm not ashamed. My car is my hobby. It beats standing up to my waste in cold water, hoping to catch a fish with a maggot (Stop it, Will) as far as I'm concerned. But the interest I have and the importance I place on my car makes me a geek. And I'm ok with that. What I'm not cool with is, given that cars are my hobby, I'm quite alarmed that I clearly know more than the guy who does this to pay his mortgage. Frightening stuff. Its the same with car salesmen - talk to them about spec/trim levels and you'd think it was their first day on the job. I couldn't stand in front of my clients and demonstrate that, without a doubt, I didn't have a fucking clue what I was talking about - I don't understand why its shown so much toleration in the motor industry.

That reminds me of the one & only time I went to a national tyre & exhaust company with a puncture, and despite advertising "quick & fit fitters" the "mechanic" I got clearly neither knew nor cared what the correct proceedure was. As he took the tyre off I read the vulcanising instructions hanging on the wall which clearly stated "appy the compound and wait (about 20 minutes IIRC) for it to cure" - he appled the compound and slapped the patch straight onto it without waiting, so I pointed out the manufacturer instructions and his reply "Yea, I know, we don't bother with that - it doesn't make any difference though" needless to say I put the wheel back in the boot & went elsewhere!

It's their final opportunity to convince you that you actually need the rft's with the greater profit margin, that is all. Seems they are harming a potential sale of either items when it comes to this group
