Best Downpipe?

Alright I will make this very simple. I own a E90 2011 335i xDrive with
- BMS Cold Air Intake
- ETS Charge Pipe
- ETS 7" FMIC
- MHD Stage 1+

Plan is to go FBO with Stage 2+ so I am only missing a downpipe!

Now I am leaning towards a catless DP since catted DP may still throw out some ECU codes and aren't that better for environment.

Which brand offers the best DP. I have some high end parts in my car, and I do not mind paying for high end products as long as they are worth it and I am not only paying for the brand!

Thanks!

Catless downpipe is just a pipe. All depends on the weld and cast quality, that would be the only difference.

In my opinion, can't beat the price and quality on the VRSF catless downpipe, have it myself and I'm very happy with it.

Yeah their pricing is indeed extremely good. The only thermodynamic value which is important with a DP is its size so it can allow a high flow of the outlet gas incoming from the turbocharger. Every brand seems to use 3" as a size, so performance wise they are all pretty similar. I guess it pretty much comes down to reliability and durability.

How is the welding with the VRSF, because I was not the biggest fan of their welding for the FMIC.

I also got VRSF downpipes and the shop that installed it did not have any issues and was pretty straightforward.

For the weld thing, I read that the FMIC with bad weld was like a earlier versions.

Anyhow the welds seemed nice when I took a look at them.

Hey you are in Gatineau to haha?

I did a lot of research about 3 years ago when I was buying my e9x downpipe...

I went with an n54tuning N55 downpipe

https://www.n54tuning.com/

same exact price as VRSF.

After looking at it, having my friends look at it, and comparing overall results...

It's the same thing as VRSF.
If I were going to do it again, I'd probably just got VRSF as I'm pretty sure it's the same product, but you're also going to get better customer service with them.

Yeah that's what I hear as well. I have been told multiple times that they have upgraded their game when it comes to quality so this is an option that I am keeping very close in my mind.

And yeah I am in Gatineau haha. I do all my installation myself, but DP might be a bit hard to reach without a proper lift. Although if I made a 7" FMIC fit on ramps I am pretty sure I could manage DP. What garage did you go to?

Great thanks for eveything. VRSF seems good and reliable for DP from many feedback I've got!

Nice. I DIY on jackstands to, altought haven't had to do anything to difficult yet. Downpipe wasn't to sure, think could have done it but oh well, ~ 300$ install.

For the garage I went to AutoXtrëm, they are really great. I plan to always go there for jobs that are to hard to DIY.

Yep ok I know exactly where you are talking about. Yeah they seem to be the best arround for mods since we don't have a lot of stuff in our area haha.

I know had to search to.

Another location I had experience with and I believe the guy is knowledgeable is OttoStadt but I had a bad customer experience side of things experience. The guy wasn't happy I called 3 times to get quotes and wasn't taking any appointments yet.

But I did 2 PPI there and it was good.

Do you go to car meets? I'm wondering if I ever saw your car or not lol!

Well this is my first car. Just got it back in January 2018 so I only attended twice this summer the one in the parking for the ToysRus/SAQ depot, but other than that no. I need to know where they post info for meets so I can participate more haha.

I think the N54tuning DP was the best value. He no longer offers them though. The first version I had of the VRSF DP was garbage. I asked for photos of the new version and didn't get the best photos. If I had to purchase one again I would look into the VRSF V2 before looking at other brands.

Ah okok. Yeah those meets are on facebook I believe.

We do a few to near the empty roads near the airport but it's not really official. It's over now because winter is almost here but next summer/spring you can pm if you want I can give you more info. We also do races there, but the police know now and they try to block it but we can still pass haha.

Yeah I know I did go there as well. At some point they tried putting concrete blocks haha. I'll keep in touch because we will eventually meet I suppose!

I looked at your website to see the range of products you have and I totally forgot about the Wagner Downpipe. I find their products very interesting. Are thay any good quality wise and how would it compare to the VSRF. They also have very decent pricing.

Other than that there also seems to be the Active Autowerke DP which could be interesting.

My 1st aftermarket DP was VRSF, catless.
2nd was COBB High Flow, catted.

The VRSF (for my tastes) was a bit too loud (when applying throttle) at moderate, local street speeds and the gas fumes were permeating my garage.

The COBB was my "Goldilocks". Performance increase, without the smell or
excessive noise.

You are correct, the High Flow, catted will still throw O2 sensor codes. But if you are self conscious about what you're throwing into the air, any catalytic converter will be better, than none at all.

Yeah the only reason I would go for a HF Catted DP is environment wise because catless is really nasty. That's why I was looking at the Wagner HF Catted DP. Now there is also COBB which your brought up and they are fairly easy to get in Canada so this would be a good option as well.

In the end there are a lot of good options!

Question to everyone, I might one day upgrade turbos.

Would a HF Catted DP be a restricting factor or it allows enough flow for enhances turbos? I would probably go very big if I were to upgrade, like one of the Big Turbos from BigBoostUsa.

A catted DP is always going to be more restrictive than a catless DP. If you really aren't sure then buy a catless DP second hand. If you don't like it then sell it for what you bought it for.

Yeah I could probably do that, but it's a bit harder than you think to sell a used performance part for a 335 in the Gatineau, Canada area hahaha.
