Fairly novice when it comes to Audio, but remember something similar when upgrading previous speakers to a higher spec without upgrading the amp.

Thanks

PS: How much were the L7 midranges?
Yes... you are correct in your assumptions there QGmbH. There is less bass now from the door mids, so I need to sort out the amp upgrade asap.

The L7 tweeters have transformed the sound... I can hear the music again !

I understand the L7 door speakers (front) are £49 plus VAT - each.

I'm fairly sure I paid less than that - seem to remember £38 or so plus VAT

Infinity upgrade

Hi, apologies for posting here several years too late but I have a standard E90 saloon with stock sound system. I upgraded the door and rear shelf speakers to Infinity 4012i a while ago, but it still sounds rubbish.

Having read some excellent posts here, gIzzE and MOB amongst others, I've realised that the Infinity's were a mistake. So I'm off to order the L7 tweeters with door covers, however, can I use the tweeters with the Infinity's or must I change to L7 midranges too? Cut the connectors on the standard speakers when I replaced them so wires are to +ve and -ve terminals on the Infinity's - was this another mistake too? So I guess question is, can I run the L7 tweeters in parallel from the Infinity's?

Planning on the Blaupunkt amp and SWS subs later.

As you'll have guessed, I've just broken all forum records for 'How stupid can questions possibly get?'!

Thanks

I think the crossover for the L7 tweeter is in the mid range.

The standard mid range actually goes lower bass wise than the L7 mids, so you may want to put that back in.

You don't want a coaxial (Infinity 4012i ) in with another tweeter, it will sound very strange.

I'm finding the L7 mids are stuggling with lower bass levels and I'm considering swapping back to the stock midrange drive units. Going to tinker with the amp settings some more first.

I had the fronts set at 125hz and above, with the subs set at 125hz and below, worked very well.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread. Im going down this route too (SWS, THA555 etc,.).

On the photos of the mids the implication is that the standard driver looks a bit better than the L7 speaker as the magnet is huge compared to the one of the right (which is noted as being L7). Is this the case or are the speakers swapped around on the lower photo?

Im all for keeping the existing mids but don't mind changing if the L7 mids are going to be better for some reason (i.e. I assume they're both 4 Ohm but perhaps the L7s can be driven harder?)

So what are people opinions on whether i should change the existing standard mids?

thanks
paul

Good Deal? Alpine & USB/Audio (SA 6FL) Retrofit

I am having these completed by BMW Hereford. I have a quote for £850 inc fitting, Vat & 'Y' cable. I was worried about the warranty as my car is less than 12 months old and if there are any problems they can sort it out.

I thought this was a good deal. What do you think?

Thanks... I'll go and check the settings again... really feel the mids are working too hard... but probably got the levels all over the shop

I think if that's all in for the USB interface, the Alpine upgrade and the Y-Cable it's a good deal.

I'll try that first then.

Any idea on what the specs of the standard speaker are. In other words would they also handle being driven by the THA555 or could they be easily damaged?

many thanks!

It is very difficult to damage speakers having too much power, 99.9% of the time it is done by not having enough, you fill them with distortion by the time you get them to the level you want.

So you will be fine.

Many thanks for the advice. I'll re-install the existing mids alongside the new L7 tweeters.

Thanks Gizze,

I'm going to have a tinker with the THA555pNp amp settings at lunchtime, will post a picture of the settings once done.

Here's a (v poor) photo of the settings for anyone else to use as a reference. If you need me to take a better one, let me know and I'll get a proper camera (not iPhone) with a flash.

Here's the diagram out the manual... (ignore the settings!)

rear speakers

Has anybody changed the speakers in the back? If so what did they put in and has it made a noticeable difference?

I didn't, under advice from people who seem to know thier stuff.... apparently it "detracts from the front sound stage"

I kept them stock and it gives a bit of back fill..... also kind of handy with reversing sensors !

Ah well, think I will take your advise and leave them.

You notice how crap they are because you hear them for a fraction of a second as the fronts have the extra amp powering them and don't come on as quickly.

For the amp;

- remove the head unit (fairly simple)
- unplug big plastic connector
- plug in Blaupunkt cabling, plug that into head unit
- route that cable from behind the head unit to the boot - easy to tuck in under the centre console trim
- decide where to put the amp - plug in end of Blaupunkt cable
- connect live wire to battery
- connect earth wire to earthing point
- turn it on check etc
- put head unit & trim back in - the only tricky part in my experience - there is little room behind the head unit to start with, the blaupunkt plug makes this worse - I spent ages cursing and trying to do this bit

I wouldn't pay more than 2 hours labour for this.
Can I ask a question...or three. You plug in the amp to the head unit, so where do the speakers plug in to? (I am assuming that they would be plugged into the Amp yes or no?)
