E93 325d M57 awful cold start noise

I’ve got a e93 325d m Sport highline 2009(59) I believe it has the m57. I’ve been told by previous owner it has DPF and EGR valve removed and the necessary flash. On cold startup it has a very nasty noise that lasts up to 30 seconds (mostly less). I’m just wandering if you’ve ever encountered this noise. I’ve got a video from inside the car and outside

I’ve got the videos and unsure how to post.

After some more diagnostics tonight. Needed to fill fuel. So drove to other side of town and back to mine with my BimmerLink connected. Noticed the temps didn’t get past 70. At fuel station googled and it should be roughly 90ish I believe and then the soot mass was 50g( I was also told by previous owner that this had all been removed so now who knows)

And before this there was a error for additional water pump. (A6d1 code)

By time I drive back (very hard) got it to 74. Slowed down for cars. And it dropped top under 70 again

Decided to take it on motorway(without stopping) and drove at legal speed with revs at 2.5-3(was a bit weird thought it was abit high) I think it wanted to a DPF regen

So I believe that it now still has the DPF and EGR(going to get it all checked out in next few days) and the thermostats aren’t working properly not allowing it to get to temp with in turn isn’t altering the DPF to be emptied

Had an injectors test as I was told that they’re absolutely atrocious and a lot of people had said it was the injectors So I’ve had these replaced Got the car back on Saturday afternoon

Sunday morning I go to start the car in the morning and low and behold. The noise is still f*****g there

So injectors now shouldn’t be a problem.

A glow plug module error is now coming up. So will have to get the module replaced soon, even though the previous owner told me numerous times that glow plugs and module have been replaced (in April) we believe the module wasn’t genuine hence probably already going bad

If anyones got any ideas of how to fix it or what to investigate it would be greatly appreciated.

And anybody know how I can upload the videos. Is YouTube the best option?

Most probably DPF & EGR were removed because injector issues.
Thermostat (there's two of them) if they are bad temp won't reach 75 C in winter.
75C is one condition for DPF regen = another reason why DPF could be removed.

Glow plugs themselves last longer than the module (generally).

Beru makes OEM one so either one is good enough but buying BMW one essentially means you buy Beru one but support BMW aftersales also.

Cold start is awful if glow plugs don't energize.

Good! That should fix cold start issue.

He can even say in april he had wings and flew to Paris, visit Thor the lightning god there and had 7000 beers there.
Would you believe him?

If car is saying to you there is glow plug faults it is 95% of times module problem. In the module there are tiny wires that melt loose from PCB over time causing no connection with glow plugs = there is no connection with the glow plug and module.

In this case car reports glow plug fault but in reality the module itself is faulty. This is a design problem.
The big connector can be loose that connects to module <- could explain why replacement is not working.

Here it gets tricky - would you buy genuine BMW part not knowing if BMW fixed the issue or buy Beru part hoping they fixed the issue because they no longer have to strictly follow BMW specifications with this part if selling under their own brand. However you are forced to buy new part because the module fails and there is no good alternative = more sales for BERU & BMW. So why would they fix the problem in the first place. The only reason why the wires are so thin is to set a limit to this module lifespan. They nailed with the design, it lasts warranty and causes problems to next owners. Too bad all non essential car electronics are somewhat affected by this bad design everywhere. Not potting PCB that is not in the cabin for example. Of course it fails after about 5 years due to humidity. We have passed the century where design was built to last. We live in a century where things are build to be replaced after some usage. Glow plug feness is a fine example of this.

To sum up - previous owner is kind of light headed because he never solved the root problem but dealt with symptoms.

Hi guys. Thanks for the replies. Went to BMW specialist with captain buumers post so he investigated

He found the glow plug module was aftermarket. And wasn’t even for the vehicle. (Ie the module was around half the size of the genuine one)

Replaced it. Picked up. Next day. No sound Perfect cold startup and no noises since it came back
