hi all hope your all doing good looking for a bit of aadvice
i have a very annoying granding, similar to pads which have gone metal to metal (just not as loud) which seems to be coming from around the gearbox/ armrest area
the noise is best heard on quiet roads and only heard from 10-30mph anything after 30 road noise takes over anything under 10 is too slow
however i have checked all obvious things
(all brakes are brand new including handbrake shoes)
(no stones caught in discs)
(no headshields/ handbrake catching)
ive read of this noise on forums before some say a diff solved it some say a gearbox some say propshaft bearing, all of which are expensive to just throw parts at, any ideas?

Have a feel of the propshaft bearing to see if it has any play in it.

have a look underneath i've had that noise before on a rear wheel drive car and it was a heat shield that had come loose and was catching on the propshaft

That's pretty much what happened with mine when the diff was starting to go. It progressively got worse over the course of a few thousand miles.

If it still makes a noise when you're coasting in neutral / clutch down then it's more likely the diff than the prop bearing. Again, it'll indicate the diff if the noise changes under acceleration

sorry for not replying, i had forgotten my login
thanks for the ideas guys, i was starting to think the diff it makes a bit of a rumble when i rotate the back wheels while lifted but i had a few other e92's that made the same noise so assumed thats just how they sounded. think thatll be the next job once i find a the right one.

hi guys incase anyone comes acrross this thread and has a similar noise i finally took it uo in the air and checked it properly, the grinding was coming from the output shaft bearing on the gearbox, however from what i have been told and researched the only option would be a replacement box as there is very limited parts

Search realoem first mate, get the part number and then search for that as other models may also use that part that you wouldn't think to search for.
