320i E90 N46 emissions/consumption problem
Hi. I got my 2005 320i about 2 years ago. It's the 110kW N46, had 130k kilometers on the clock. Very well kept inside and outside. Previous owner had a lot of work done, like timing chain replacement, some sort of oil separator/PCV i don't know exactly the name. Also done the transmission maintenance (oil i guess). It's an automatic btw.
When i went for my MOT the emissions were bad, as told by the inspector. He said that it smells like the car was throwing out raw petrol and he guessed that i have very bad fuel consumption. It's the case anyway, short city driving gets me up to 16l/100km. I tested it on longer way (300km open road mostly) where I managed to get only 8.5. This is by manually shifting and really going easy on the pedal. There is no visible faults whatsoever. It doesn't consume much oil as well, I service it every 12 months and about 8000km, don't need top up. Last summer i noticed that it started losing coolant, i had to top it up twice over the summer. Didn't have the problem since second top up (strange). Mechanic didn't find any apparent coolant leaks. He did say that most likely someone took out the catalytic converter and that's why the exhaust was blackened. Once again there are no fault codes, car runs ok without misfire. |
