N54 Oil leaks

I just had my car in the shop to replace a faulty injector and the shop was telling me I had some severe oil leaks.

They noted filter stand gasket? I'm assuming that just the regular oil filter gasket?

They also noted the oil cooler thermostat assembly was leaking. They told me that in order to fix that problem a new assembly needed to be put in. Does anyone know of an issue where you have to buy a new assembly to fix a leak? They wanted like 1300 to fix the leaks so I'm not really interesting in having them fix it when I can do it in the garage. I just wanted to verify this on here. I haven't really heard the terminology they used and I've only had the car since November.

Thanks!

Yes that is correct. The assembly has gaskets that you can replace as well. No need to buy a new assembly.

That is what I figured. The guy there was making sound like you couldn't get the specific part or gasket unless you bought the whole new assembly. That's cool. I'll just order that stuff and tear in to the car then. Thanks man.

Two gaskets are available, ofh to block & ofh to thermostat housing its best to change them both & also replace the two o rings for the oil feed pipes.
However there is a third gasket that goes under the cover to the oil stat, that's the square cover held in place with two star screws on the rhs of the stat housing. This gasket isn't sold separately & requires a new stat housing .

Zillyzill, just a word of caution.
Some people like myself have done the OFHG twice.
Why, cause either they don't torque it right or the design is really weak.
I did it, then did it 10 months later again.
But oil got on my belt, and had to change that also.
Made a DIY on the belt, tensioner upper and lower pulley.....lol.

My 2 cents on OFHG DIY.
Get the new gasket.
Get Permatex Ultra Copper gasket maker also.
Clean both surfaces.....really well.
Place a extremely small beed in OFH grove.
Place Gasket in grove.
Place another small beed of gasket maker in the imbedded gasket.
Install it and HAND tighten ONLY all bolts.
Let it cure for a bit as per directions 20-60 min depending on outside temp.
Then Torque each bolt to Spec.
So far 2.5 years...... No issues.
Good luck.

this is excellent advice. if you want your oil filter housing gasket to hold for a while, use gasket maker. The oem replacement procedure just doesn't cut it
