PCV valve is always a good choice for the E9X at this stage in their age. Since you will have the cover off and tubes/hoses disconnected, I would probably consider an oil catch can. Rob Beck makes a particularly good version. Will help you avoid having to walnut blast your valves.
As for tools, you'll need a metric socket set, torx set, and a 10mm deep socket to release the ground screw post near the injectors/plugs/coils (see picture for Home Depot/Husky version and SKU)

Perfect! Thanks for the reply. Should both hoses be replaced? Blow by and crank case? And I’m going with an Elring oem valve cover, their is a lot of choices but this one seems next best other than genuine for $350 usd

Starter recently went out on me but is now replaced and I am considering the valve cover gasket or new cover along with the oil filter housing next haha.
Really surprised there is no quality metal aftermarket solution for these plastic valve covers on the N51. Aluminum or something else. The only one I saw I would not put on the car. Considering getting one from FCP but that $540 price tag must factor in for the lifetime replacement. That is really expensive for just a valve cover just because of the way they designed it. Keep us posted. |

I would inspect the hoses and determine for your self what condition they are in. That said, your car is 13 years old or so, and rubber degrades overtime, so replacing your hoses now while you were in there certainly is not a bad idea. Is it technically necessary? I can't answer that for you. If they are pliable and have no cracks, then maybe you could let it ride for a while longer…

Just making sure I have all required tools/parts. I saw somewhere that a 14mm flare nut is needed, which I don’t have one so I’ll have to source that and a reliable 1/4 torque wrench as well for the valve cover bolts. |

That vent hose at the back WILL break so have one on hand. If you're FBO or less, the OEM pcv is fine but the RB one is better. Other than that, I think you're good to go. It's a decently straightforward job on the n54, worst part is just getting it into place without the gasket falling out.

Is it just the one hose? The crank case vent hose? I thought there was 2 that people recommend replacing.
