I had hospital appt just got back..
When I got outside my house put in reverse I felt all of sudden my steering wheel felt much heavier somehow, I reversed back in my drive way saw some kind of smoke coming out from engine bay switched the engine off..

I started the engine again after few minutes heard some kind of noise coming from engine bay..

Switched the engine off again..

Checked the engine oil it did seem bit low on the dip stick, topped it up.

Started the engine again it started all fine steering didn't felt heavy seemed normal..

I have turned the engine off but just thinking what could it be..

Any ideas Guys

Thanks.

Well difficult one, I can't see an obvious reason why you would have smoke from the engine bay. Have you driven it since? Obviously check the power steering fluid. Suspension ok, ie hasn't collapsed on one side etc?

Was just about to suggest that pulley... but the garage beat me to it! Sad times, but, at least it’s fixed near to home and you’re not stuck, every cloud etc

Garage List
2014 BMW 335d  [0.00]
When I read your post the first thing I thought was the tvd going. Firstly because of the loss of power steering and secondly the smell. The part of the tvd still attached to the crank was probably rubbing on the old belt.

Same thing happened to me last summer in the remote Isles of Scotland - not the most ideal place!

How many miles has your car done? Mine had 186k miles when the tvd let go.

you have had the similar symptoms as me --

i was driving don the motorway, as I came off the mway and going round the round about, felt the steering going heavy and then normal. did not think of anything, thought it may just be the road surface (grooves in the tarmac). went into a multi storey, opened my window, could smell a slight burning rubber smell. opened the bonnet, could not see anything. Came back and drove off, got back onto the mway, stopped at services, came to start the car, i got a battery discharge warning light and the steering did not turn at all.

Poked my head under the engine bay, all the belts seem fine and everything running. called the AA, they said the alternator was not charging the battery and not enough juice to drive the power steering pump, was recovered home.

ran my diagnostics software, all host of errors came up from IBS (intelligent battery system) cable fault, to alternator not charging to steering lock fault, batter fault. Cleared the errors, drove around for a while, the steering would get heavy, checked the battery voltage through the dash display, showed 11.8v. I replaced the battery hoping it was that, but nope. Then read the value at alternator, it was showing fluctuating voltage at idle, replaced that and the belts but same issues still existed.

ran the diagnostics again, pointed to the IBS lead positive in the back - it is sensitive to movement and can easily get damaged. Replaced that and again same symptoms

at this stage was at the end of my tether and just wanted rid of the car. I thought I would have a look under the bay again, while the air con was switched I noticed the serpentine belt would slow down and come to a stop, then i would get host of warning battery low lights. Bit more reading, found out the crankshaft pulley can fail and was quite common over in the US.

Replaced this and it solved the issue.

if anyone wants me to write a mini how to do this, please let me know.

BTW I have a brand new crankshaft pulley with 4x new stretch bolts for the 330d and 335d (may fit other variants) - Cortesine brand which is the supplier to BMW (they just put a BMW stamp on it and mark up the price). I have a brand new one that I can sell for £190.00 (exc postage)

Oh that estimate looks slightly high for me -

the crankshaft pulley and 4x new stretch bolts are £195.00
under try needs to come off
fan assembly needs to come out
you will have access to the aux belt/a/c belt
the crankshaft pulley is held on by 4x torx belts, this can be difficult if they are tight as you have to wedge it so it does not rotate anti clockwise to prevent damage to the engine
and it just pops off (becrafull it is heavy)
the new one fits on reverse (ensure the 4 x bolts are done up with torque wratchet and then an torque angle driver to tightern it to 120 degrees
belts go back on (i replaced mine and the tensioer)
fan and under tray back on

When I did this it took me a day in all because I did not know the procedure fully, did not have correct tools and was doing it on my parents drive

If i had to do this again I reckon its half a day job, but for a mechanic probs 3 hours labour (taking into account if the bolts are stuck on)

so £200 for the pulley (inc bolts), 2 x new belts (I would use genuine BMW one) about £60.00, tension er (I cant remember how much this was) and 3 hours labour (£180), I would expect to pay £550-£600

if you would like I can post up some pics tomorrow and the new pulley to see if it matches your part number

I paid about £300 and the garage reused the old belt but the muppets put it on inside out and I didn't realise until about 800 miles later when I got back from holiday. Ended up changing the belt, a couple of deflection pulleys and the tensioner as it was making a horrible noise. Been OK since.

My power steering is electric so I didn't notice immediately when the tvd let go.

Those 4 bolts designs are 10 mins work, after the air box scoop is removed.

Most garages are a bunch of blaggers, when you find a decent one - stay with em!

Glad it's sorted

i would partially agree, 3 of mine came off without any difficulty, the 4th one using the same breaker bar just did not want to budge and spent a bit more time on this one fear of snapping it (I dont have great record with seized bolts lol).

I think on the 320d it has the single massive bolt which to unscrew needs to go clockwise and these can be a pain if seized on
