Stock ugly rims - How can I change

Hi all,

New to the forum. I am seeking advice regarding my current stock bmw rims (photo attached). They are the ugliest rims that any company could design. I am not sure why they are even made in the first place but I'd like to have them replaced. The problem is, they have pressure sensor. I don't know where that is or how it works but apparently it works.

- How can I look for a second hand rim that also has the pressure sensor and will work with my car?

- Can I use wheel caps on these? Would they even fit?

My car is a 2010 318d and currently I have 225/55 r16 I believe.

LOL - I got to admit, my friend, those are truly awful.

That said - the TPMS sensor is attached to the back of the valve stem and can be moved from one wheel to another without issue. Feel free to pick up some less hideous rims.

Cheers.

Link below to further details and a photo of where the pressure sensor is located in the wheel:

Those are hideous mate!

Look for some OEM wheels for sale in your area that include the TPMS (tire pressure monitor sensors). There are two different versions of TPMS sensors, for your 2010 you need the LCI sensors (2010 & later).

If your car needs new tires than it might be worth it to just take the sensors off your existing wheels and purchase new wheels & tires. I doubt you would be able to sell those wheels for much, they are quite ugly lol. A set of sensors cost over 100 EUR so there's some value there.

The wheel in question is BMW Style 46.

Definitely not something you'd wanna roll on during summer.

For a winter wheel it is not that bad actually.

Haha I’m glad that you guys share the same opinion. Is it possible to install wheel covers on these or no?

no that wheel is not designed to have a cover, if it were a steelie, then yes.

^This, unfortunately. The saving grace is that nearly anything is going to be better than what you have currently. You should be able to purchase a set of used BMW OEM wheels for around 150EUR or less if you look around. They won't be mint condition, but certainly an upgrade from where you sit currently.

OMG, I can't seem to unsee those rims. Someone should be b-slapped for creating them.

I am looking at a set of e90 tyres (17 inches). I currently have 16 inches. Do you suggest sticking to 16 or would 17 be better? Also should I ask about the sensors on the 17 inch tyres? Or can I simply transfer the ones from these ugly ones?

It's really up to you. Even if you live in areas where the roads are a bit rough, a 17 inch wheel should still not impact ride comfort too much. Going up to an 18 inch or 19 inch wheel might cause some unnecessary increases in NVH, though.

TPMS sensors are transferable from one wheel to another, but they are typically recommended to be replaced every 5-7 years, so you may want to take that into consideration. Not a mandatory thing, but worth noting.

Here are a couple of links about the TPMS systems.
