Price of E85

I hadn't filled up with E85 for a month or so but when I filled up today at the United Service Station, Loganlea, I was surprised to see the price had jumped from the normal 139.9c/L to 154.9c/L. Is this now the going price across Australia or is it just this servo ripping us off? If the price has increased, I would be interested in the justification since it is internal to Australia and has no connection to the oil price.

The price up here has always been 139.9c/L until now. It never ever changed. What was the price in Melbourne before the rise?

Coupes has a point though - whatever the rise in petrol prices, it shouldn't have that much impact on the price of e85 when 85% of the fuel is ethanol. A jump of 30c in the price of petrol should only see a rise of about 4.5c in the price of e85...

We're just getting gouged on everything now though - saw a report the other day saying that the fuel stations are now averaging 12c a litre profit on normal 91RON, so that would rise to around 29 - 30c per litre profit on 98RON (given that wholesale it's only around an extra 3c per litre but they've got us all used to the idea that it should cost 20c / L more).

Last time we had prices this high in '08, the servos were only pocketing around 1.5 - 3c per litre, and relying on you buying a coke or a chocky bar for the bulk of their profits.

I sent an email to United Australia voicing my disappointment in the price increase for E85 fuel and requesting a reason for the rise. I am sure I will not get any response. I included in the email how people should be encouraged into using E85, where possible, because of its environmentally friendly properties and how the latest price increase makes E85 way uneconomical to use compared with 98 octane due to the increase in volume required per 100km compared with 98.

Around town, I used to average around 11L/100km on 98 while at present I am getting 18L/100km on 100% E85. When you do a cost comparison between the two, based on the price increase, the gap is extending. If you take an average 98 price of $1.80/L at 11L/100km, the cost is $19.80 for 100km. When E85 was at $1.40/L, the cost at 18L/100 was $25.20 for 100km. Now with the new price of $1.55/L at 18L/100, the cost is $27.90 for 100km. A difference of $8.10/100km compared with 98 and a increase of $2.70/100km compared with the old price for E85.

Ethanol price is determined by the TGP (Terminal Gate Price).
Australian Fuel Standards Act (2000) defines E85 as 70-85% Ethanol.
Calculations based on 15% oil content need to be calculated at the maximum 30%.

Any remainder increase is profiteering at the point of service.

I did get a response from United Australia.

"Thanks you for contacting United.

While E85 is made with only 15% Premium 98, the cost of Ethanol has recently increased in the market which resulted in the price change you mentioned.

We understand your concerns, however, we are confident that we price our products as fairly as we can for our customers.

Kind regards,"
