P29D1 (Misfire Cylinder 5)
Hello all;
I have an 08 E90 N54. Lately, I have been getting a very shaky engine and a service engine soon (P29D1 Misfire, Cylinder 5) light in addition. This occurs while driving or even when I turn the car on. When this occurs while driving, it happens in the 2-3K RPM range with normal acceleration. I do not have to do a WOT to get this to happen. First thing I did was swap my ignition coils between cylinders 1 and 5, and the misfire stayed in cylinder 5 by the methods mentioned above (regular driving or when I turn the car on). This does not happen consistently, for example I turned the car on 5 times today and got the misfire 3 of those times on start up. Second thing I did was, I purchased the redline fuel cleaner and put that in my gas tank (Friday 1/5/15). I have not gotten the misfire while driving since then, but I do occasionally get it when I turn the car on. A few hours ago (9:30 PM CST), I swapped spark plugs between cylinders 1 and 5. After this, I turned the car on and got the misfire again in cylinder 5. I currently have 77K miles and have not gotten it walnut blasted yet (I know I need to do this as soon as possible). What I am thinking of doing next is cleaning the camshaft solenoids, performing a walnut blast, and swapping injectors between 1 and 5. I just wanted to see other peoples' opinions. I read someone mentioned TMAP sensor? Thanks in advance! Update 1/23/15: I've noticed my car will not misfire on startup if it has been off for a little while (over 2 hours). For example: After a nights rest of sleep, waking up in the morning to go to work. When I turn the car on, there is no misfire. If the car is off for a little amount (less than 2 hours). For example: Leaving work and going to the grocery store. Turning the car on after a day of work, it is a smooth start up. Once I reach the grocery store, shop for 15-30 minutes, and come back to turn my car on, I will get that misfire. I have recorded a video of this and will upload it once I get home. I will brifely explain what happens: Once the car turns on, you hear a clicking sound from the engine as it is running. The RPM is a little shfty right under 1K. After roughly 40 seconds, the RPM drops near .5K , the clicking sound gets louder, RPM goes up near 1K and back down to .5K, and Service Engine Soon light comes on with a code reading P29D1 Misfire Cylinder 5. If you swap injectors they need to be calibrated, try swapping your spark plugs first you will need a special socket on turbo motors

Hey Nick,
I appreciate your response. I've actually swapped coils and spark plugs between cylinders 1 and 5. The misfire has not moved. I'll be trying a walnut blast next weekend to see if this helps the issue. If not, I'll be working on the injectors and I should have my OBD II USB cable coming in so I can code them. |
