Great write up, been waiting for one of these for the E90, google'd it and it came right up! Going to throw a K&N in my 330D, see if i can squeeze a few more horses out. As for the fuel econ. well thats dropped to averaging 36MPG round town, about the best Ive had recently so its time for a cleaner change.

Excellent write up, could do with a few more like that.

What a ball-ache of a job though - I thought the 944S2 was bad but I think that's worse.

Jeez, you can see why service costs are so high. Nice DIY guide.

Thanks Dr Dave for the write up and photos.

This proved to be a great help when I changed my 325d air filter at 34k.
Loads of flys, leaves and grit in the air box!
Took me just over an hour to do.
Replaced it with a bmc airfilter.
Whoever designed this filter arrangement wants one inserted sideways.
There is plenty of space infront and to the left of the engine to get an easier access airbox in.

Thanks again.

Going to bite the bullet on this, just bought a K&N air filter (E-2657).

I got a good deal on Halford Pro 150 piece Socket Set costs me £119.99 reduced from £199.99. Has the E14 and E18 among other useful tools so a good buy.

Wish me luck on doing this this weekend.

Your air filter is a little awkward to change, on the 335d its literally a couple of clips and 2 mins to change!

Hi Guys,

Job finished in 1.5 hours. I followed the Haynes manual (same as Dave's method).

The only thing I would add is that you do need to replace the torx bolts when putting the top strut brace back on.

Also Dave mentioned that the middle torx bolt is difficult to undo - he is right. The torx bolts are really only undoable with a breaker bar as this has more leverage. I tried the ratchet but it felt like it was going to buckle so backed out and grabbed my breaker. Job done.

PS. remember to use a torque wrench to put the torx bolts to the correct tightness.

Anyway, the K&N went in and to be fair I can’t feel anymore power but I'm sure judging by that photo above the new air filter will help the engine breath better.

Fuel filter tomorrow (weather pending).

I think the LCI 330d is now just a pannel filter like yours.

Do you have the torque settings for these bolts? Where did you buy the manual? does it cover the 320d?

I changed my filters after picking up my 06 330d with 39k on the clock. I couldnt believe how choked up the filter was! I was meaning to look up and check if it should have already been done with the car having full BMW service history. 60k is to long to run a filter id reckon?

Thanks Dave, the pictures really helped!

I changed my Air and micro filter at the the weekend and it all went smoothly. I bought a FRAM Filter kit from FoS Performance for £57.99 on Ebay. This contained an Air, Micro, Oil and Fuel Filters.

Still got the oil change and fuel filter to do but that can be for another weekend..
