OK - an update. I've bought cable and managed to get the INPA / EDIABAS software running. Bought this one

I've read the codes which turn out to be:

5DF0: Pump Unit Faulty
5DF1: XY - Unknown error position (seems to be related to pump relay or connector)

I've contacted BBAREMAN who have said that they will refurbish for £150 plus carriage plus VAT. The official BMW repair kit for my part number is over £800.

My part number is 3451-6778238-01 which is not as common as those refurb units readily available on ebay.

In response to earlier posts this is a very common fault - just search for e90 hydro or e90 abs failure.

I just need to brave the appalling weather sometime soon to remove the unit and send it for refurb.

BTW - the INPA software allows you to cycle the ABS pump as part of the bleeding process so fingers crossed should be pretty straightforward.

Windows 7 32 bit using INPA 5.02 at the moment on a old Sony Vaio Core 2 Duo laptop with 3GB
I found that Win 7 automatically downloaded the latest Virtual Com Port drivers for the com port chip on the cable.

I had set out with the objective of a perfect install and at the first attempt managed to read engine codes but not DSC codes - various file mismatch errors, missing files. I obtained newer Daten files but still not perfect. I need to understand more about merging in the various Daten files and ensuring I have a compatible set.

I have just reinstalled the SW from scratch and managed to read the DSC codes despite a few error messages appearing on the way. That's all I need for now. I had a play around checking various aspects of INPA including steering angles etc - all looks very intersting!

I am currently setting up a Win XP VM and will experiment further over the coming weeks. My main priority at the moment is getting the ABS unit fixed. Then I'll need to sort out the DPF and replace the stats.

i took my car back to the dealers yesterday for the warranty work....that was fun, driving a bmw in snow with no traction control and no abs !
I should have it back mid week all being well.

Yes I have the same lights apart from the ABS.
I also have the battery light come up a few times.

Anyone have any idea on costs? I do not have warrenty so slighty worried on the price.

Hi, I had the same fault earlier this year. I took it to a friend who is ex Bmw tech, he code read it and came up with the Dsc fault, I have not got the fault code to hand. I got the part through Bmw and he fitted it, the brake fluid had to be changed at the same time. £300 all in I couldn`t complain. He knew straight away what it would be and so did the Bmw dealer, they get a couple of calls a week regarding this fault.

OK - an update. Here goes.......

I sent the DSC/ABS/Hydo unit to BBA REMAN on 30th March after exchanging emails with them and receiving assurances that they felt they could repair the common faults (including faulty pump motor) associated with this unit within 2 - 3 days. The part arrived at BBA on 2nd April.

I kept checking the status of the repair on their website but could not see any concrete progress. I rang them a few times and was told the part was still being tested. I received a message from BBA on 11th April and when I returned the call on Friday 12th I was told they could not fix it (no details) and I would have to pay £55.20 for test fee and return postage. Great! Despite being severely pissed off I agreed to pay the ransom.

I then rang ECU Testing who said that they were confident they could repair the unit. If there was no fault they would charge a testing fee. If there was a fault and they couldn't fix it I would only be charged for return postage. I completed their online form and sent the unit to ECU testing as soon as I received it from BBA (15th April). The unit arrived at ECU Testing on 16th and was registered on their system on 16th. Periodic status changes were available on their web site and I received a text on 23rd April asking me to call them. I duly did and was advised the the unit was repaired and I could expect to receive it on Wednesday or Thursday 24/25th April. The problem was a fault on the pump motor. I received the part on Thursday 25th, refitted it Friday evening taking care to disconnect the battery first but not taking care not to close the boot!!! Luckily I was able to remove the through loading/ski case pack behind the armrest, drop the back of the seats and reconnect the battery by climbing into the boot.

How do you open the boot with the battery disconnected? The mechanical key in the fob does not appear to open the boot.

I switched on the ignition and - lo and behold - no fault lights.

I spent this morning bleeding the brakes with a little help from INPA to modulate the ABS unit.

My MOT was due on 1st April so I then headed straight for a pre-booked MOT at National Tyre and Autocare - only for a power cut to strike half way through the process. They have told me they will finish the job tomorrow.

So - a long, frustrating process.

To buy a new replacement ABS/DCS unit would have been in the order of £1800

ECU Testing fixed it for the sum of £240 including vat and return postage.

My real regret is the wasted time and cost incurred in dealing with BBA Reman.

ECU testing were great when my Mazda 3 MPS ABS/DSC pump unit needed repaired. So many car have these dicey units its unbelievable!

AFAIK You will not be able to drive your car as removing the ABS unit involves disconnecting 6 brake lines

i had the exact same lights on the dash not long ago. luckily i have bmw warranty and they fixed it. turns out it was a steering wheel angle censor and also two glow plugs needed replacing. total cost for BWM was near 1k, only cost me my excess.

I replaced the steering wheel angle sensor and battery sensor.
This looked liked it resolved my Transmission limp mode error but last night the DCS, hand break and ABS lights came back as the picture above.

Could it be the rear break pad sensor as I had these replaced by dealer?

Maybe they damage sensor-cable by accident? Take it back and blame them.

A faulty brake pad sensor should not trigger the warning lights you mention. The only real way to know the cause is to have the codes read. Otherwise it could result in expensive guesswork.

when you say have the codes read
WHen the lights come on you have to keep your hand on the button on the signal stick for 5 seconds or so? If I turn the engine off then - will this still keep the fault codes?

I have already taken it to the BMW dealer and they must of looked at the fault codes but could not be 100% sure what the problem was.
Said maybe it could be the Alternator.

No - I mean have the technical fault codes read rather than those that are accessible without diagnostic equipment. For example the codes 5DF0 and 5DF1 will specifically point to a problem with the mechanical or electronic components within the DSC/ABS unit. If the problem is caused by ABS Sensors or Steering Angle sensor then the technical codes should indicate that. The codes available by pressing the button on the stalk do not provide the detail necessary. Often an independent garage will read the fault codes without charging.

Also see http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=788648 which emphasises potential complexity even if codes are read - although no final diagnosis in this post.

I had the same errors - my car had warranty & it only turned out to be the steering angle sensor..... it just needed re-setting.

I swapped another faulty unit to my car, sent my one to ECU Testing for rebuild.
Today I swapped back my own repaired unit and everything is OK now.
