- too many flebay sellers list non-FLA mirror as FLA
- pass on ones you can not confirm - there will be more next week/month
- look for ones that has camera on the picture and 2 connectors.
- ask seller for VIN number and check donor for 5AC
- favor higher end model donors: E90 M3, E71
- do not pay 3-digit price - you can get it below $100 (I got one this week for $69)
Got it, thanks. Are you getting yours from a pick & pull or also eBay?

I found all of them on fleabay.

First 2 were by local-ish junkyard seller in Rancho Cordova - I went there and got it in person.

IMO I overpaid for the first one, but it came with cover and in nearly pristine condition.

Last one is coming this weekend - will update on its condition

I installed 3 FLA mirrors.
Despite the same part number, all 3 FLA mirrors are slightly different

Target: 2011 E90
Donor: 2009 M3
The mirror dome color is red (same as original)
No operational issues

Target: 2013 E70
Donor: 2014 E71
The mirror dome color is grey (same as original)
Compass not as great as stock

Target: 2009 E91
Donor: 2014 E84
The mirror dome color is grey (original was red)
The mirror's main plug pinout was different from stock.
High beam shuts down on virtually all road signs
Compass not as great as stock.
This was the cheapest one - under $80 shipped (later refunded by seller, hence $0)
It arrived with cosmetic issues (looks like someone used pry bar to remove it)

I think compass needs magnetic deflection zone update and recalibration.

Pinout variance.

I had no wiring on any of my cars for pins 4,5,6,7 coming from FZD
These suppose to be signal from both exterior mirrors.
All FLA mirrors were missing these wires.

All my cars had Pin 1 (reverse & softop/hardtop open orclosed) wired from FZD, but all FLA mirrors had no feed inside the mirror

Pins 3 (Terminal 15), 8 (Terminal 30) and 10 (Terminal 31) are required for mirror to work .
Pin 9 (alarm system LED) is relevant if the car has alarm installed

Only the E91 stock (non-FLA) mirror had wiring for all pins

I recently picked up an X6 mirror (p/n 51169225980) from eBay for a great deal, so I'll be attempting this soon on my pre-LCI E92.

I've been doing a deep dive, and found this E60 documentation to be helpful:

https://5series.net/forums/attachmen...istant_web.pdf

Specifically, I am interested in this bit:

Quote:
The FLA is firmly connected to the vehicle windscreen by means of the mirror base.
Without corresponding adaptation in vertical direction, the field of vision of the high beam
assistant would vary upward or downward depending on the angle of inclination of the
windscreen.

To compensate for this deviation, different mounting brackets are used corresponding to
the type of vehicle.
I am undecided if my light sensor has the right vertical angle for my windshield.

After mounting to my windshield, it looks to me as if my light sensor is pointing slightly upward. Is this correct, or should it be perfectly vertical/downward?

According to RealOEM, p/n 51169225980 applies to our cars as well as the X5/X6, etc. It seems that mirrors with "different mounting brackets" likely all share the same mirror part number (stamped on the mirror itself, to which the light sensor bracket mounts).

The bracket from my X6 mirror has "+ 2 degrees" stamped on it.

I know it's a long shot, but does anyone know what angle bracket an E92 w/ FLA should have?

I'd also just be curious to see a pic if anyone has one.

Hi, I would like to attempt this retrofit too. I have noticed that there is two types of FLA sensor:

Which is better for E92 2009?
Does the same trim part 51167161083 works for both?

Gen 2 - the round camera. Not sure if that part number works for both - I’d look for a mirror out of an X6 from 2013 as many of them came with FLA as part of the LED light package.

I got mine out of an X6 for a great deal.

I'm pretty convinced that I need to adjust the angle of the camera with some shims, though (see my longwinded post above).

I would leave it as is.

Slightly upward should handle cars coming at you while you are at a bottom of a hill.

The high beam assist should pick up cars that are close to you anyway.

If you note that things are not quite right you can always add a shim layer.

Thanks, good points. It might be intentional and correct.

Gonna find time to finally bite this off soon.

How about F01 mirror? It seems to be connected on K-CAN same speed network as E series.

P.S.
this seems to be a good read: https://www-drive2-com.translate.goo..._x_tr_pto=wapp

Does anybody have any idea what I am missing?
- I have retrofitted FLA. Everything is working fine. Only thing that I am missing is tick box in CIC. I have that option, but I cannot tick that like it's blank. In kombi I have little icon. (I've done everything, FA/VO, Reset and recode CAS, FRM, CIC and KOMBI. Only that "intickable" tick box is driving me mad

Can you enable FLA via Kombi?

It should now be available in the menus.

Yes I can. Fla overall is working. After turning on I have little icon in cluster. Just that checkbox in CIC doesn’t do anything and I cannot tick that. Maybe I have too old FRM (2006)? I have retrofitted CIC with combox.

It could be.

From what I understand a more recent build date is needed 2010-2011

Being able to toggle it from the CIC but is not a deal breaker if you can control if via the lower stalk.

Once you have it on can you enable it by pushing the upper stalk (turn signals) forward while driving at night in “auto mode”.

I’ve tried 2010, 2011, 2009, 2008 and nothing is working unfortunately. I cannot turn on even welcome light, which I was able to to from cluster, but not from CIC, so I think that old FRM is a problem in my case.

Leaving info for the future: If you have retrofitted CIC, to gain access to welcome lights and FLA you need to have at least FRM2. I had FRMFA, and after replacing that to FRM2 everything is working like it should

Just did the retrofit and am super pleased. I have an FRM3 in my car and it was kinda a pain in the ass to track down the latest SP-DATEN. I also have an e93 and apparently we use a different part number for our mirrors (convertible top messes with the compass apparently?) That being said, I couldn't get the option to appear in iDrive even though VA_LONGDISTANCELIGHT is set to aktiv. Overall I'm happy with this as I cant really ever see a reason to disable it

did you default code CIC after you updated VO?

It is fantastic for rural scenario (e.g. mountain roads) and nearly useless in urban areas

Disclaimer:
- I am no expert in coding - double check "the manual"
- I do struggle with DATEN files across my BMWs

I recall running into "no iDrive option" when retrofitting 1 of 3 my E9X.

It looks (to me) that you have correctly
- updated VO
- default coded FRM and KOMBI (since the you can use the feature)

but missed default coding for CIC.

The CIC "should" pick up High Beam Assist option after default coding (without need to set a custom option)

if I remember correctly, there are 2 different profiles - one for updating VO and another one to code (default or with customized options).

---

After struggling for years across multiple BMW with different daten files, I eventually bought protool - it made coding and retrofits so much easier.
It is pricy, challenging to justify for 1 car only.
