Dealer BS?
So long story short, I'm suffering from rough idle, erratic rpms at idle and stuttering.
Took it to dealer and they diagnosed a BAD FUEL LEVEL SENSOR of all things... They want $800.00 to fix it and to me it seems like complete BS considering the symptoms. I highly doubt a bad fuel level sensor can cause this... Any ideas on what to do from here? |

first mistake was taken it to the dealership , you probably got charge 1 or 2 hours already on diagnostics alone without any work being done to the car. Unless you are somehow still under warranty
Its a gamble at this point , dealer already troubleshoot the issue , they are going to charge you 800 to fix it . You could probably buy the sensor , take it to a private mechanic and have it change for less However if it does not fix the problem , there goes that money. If you wanted someone else to troubleshoot the problem , then a good indy mechanic around your area is where to go , but I m assuming they are going to start troubleshooting from zero , so they may also charge you the time they take to troubleshoot plus whatever they find. Its a tough call. I dont see how the level sensor can caused that problem, usually is a vanos , plugs, coils , leak , type of thing . But I m assuming the dealer used bmw diagnostics tools so there may be something there |

Find a good reputable German/Euro car Indy shop in your area. They should be less and not look to rip you off. That’s the first thing I did when I got my BMW.
Priceless! |

unfortunately I've found that most places "diagnostics" entails plugging in the computer and asking the car what's broken, not actually investigating the car to see why it says a part is broken, or if the error codes are actually related to the driveability issues. OP may very well have some sort of level sensor sanity error, so that's just what the dealer says the problem is. Or they could be calling the fuel pressure/filter assembly on the left side a level sender. I put a new fuel pump in my e91 in like 2 hours and a lifetime warranty delphi pump was less than $200. I think an $800 estimate to replace a level sender is outrageous, and I'd take my junk elsewhere. Actually I'd invest in a can cable and a laptop to run INPA on, and then diagnose my junk in my driveway. Here's the "level sender" in the left side of the tank. https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw...ft-16117163295 Anyone could do the replacement with some internets help. You pop the back seat off and pull the locking ring, it's pretty simply other than the stench of gasoline. Rent the lock ring tool at autozone. |

A fuel pump will cause issues like this, mostly in the higher rpms were the fuel demand is more. It will also show on the idrive,,the level sensor has nothing to do with the pump, there seperate from each other. When was the last time you had a systems update, new plugs, clean vanos solinoids, and air filter? These will also create systems like these.
