n55 engine date question

Hey guys I am probably gonna buy the engine off car-part.com but before it shows me the engines for sale it asks me
2011 BMW 335-i
Engine
(3.0L), gasoline, single turbo, RWD, from 1/11
(3.0L), gasoline, single turbo, RWD, thru 12/10

I have to choose one of those which would I choose? could I use my vin number to find out? and I found out that the ones from 1/11 are a bit cheaper so hopefully its that one what do you guys think and I would check the build date of the car but its in the shop and since it was repainted they removed some of those stickers

Put the last 7 of your VIN into mdecoder.com. It'll tell you the build date

Depending how mechanically inclined you are you can technically get any N55 to work. You just might have to swap oil pans or some accessory items. If you need it to be exact then use the date above.

I would guess it has something to do with attempting to distinguish between PWG n55s from EWG n55s? There are also HPFP differences from early N55 to later N55 model years. It wouldn't be plug and play. As others have stated, you can tear down and swap accessories if you buy a "loaded" engine. Even Early N55s have different HPFP and Injectors depending on year. Same style parts but different brand HPFP pumps and slightly different injectors.

You can find some of these differences when looking at repair instructions on Newtis.info.

so if mine was produced in 2010 and I buy a 2011 engine I would swap over the hpfp?

I'm not 100% sure in regards to production date, but the new HPFP appeared in the 2012+ model year cars. The best way to know for sure is to run the affiliated VIN number with the motors you are looking at purchasing. The N55 motors with the older style HPFP are also warrantied to 70k miles, where as the 2012+ with the new HPFP do not have an extended warranty. If you still are having problems finding out for sure, I could run the VIN for you to see if it has the extended HPFP warranty.

Thats a 2012, so its going to have a different HPFP and a different ECU. I am unsure how compatible or easy it would be to swap. When I was looking at used options for my motor I was only looking at N55s from 2011 model year cars. The risk of having to potentially purchase more major parts or things not being 100% compatible was too much for me to roll the dice on a 2012+ motor.

So this one guy can get me a new engine and install it for 3k$ but he is kinda sketchy he said he can fit any n55 into my car and my dads mechanic can engine swap a n55 for 1000$ but I am not sure if he can do any I told him I have some mods done and he said thats no problem you he can swap over so maybe he can do the same for the other parts

I’d say if you’re getting a new engine I’d avoid anyone that’s even remotely sketchy. Worth taking your time and spending some extra money to have it done right, especially if you’re planning on keeping the car.

There is no way that is going to be anywhere near a "new engine" for that price. Thats dirt cheap for a higher mileage used N55, let alone a freshly rebuilt or re-man motor. Are there no used 2011 model year N55s in your area?

Best I have ever seen was $2500 for a used engine with 75k miles on it.

He said what he does is buy the car from the auction with working engine so generally 90 day warranty and just puts it in my car and then he prob parts out the rest of the car he has a bunch of bmws there all taken apart with engine swaps and stuff he knows what he is doing but still I dont trust at all
