Mhd and fuel economy

The n54 has an aspect of the factory tune that I love, not building boost when not under load. Therefore saving fuel.

My question is, do the mhd tunes maintain that? I'm thinking I'll go maxed out time (I'm FBO w/stg 1 turbos) but since it's my daily, I don't want to kill my fuel economy.

In my experience, no. In daily driving for me, I have to work VERY hard to stay out of boost on stage 2+ OTS tune. as soon as I crack the throttle the car wants to go. It's one of the few things I miss from my big turbo WRX- I had to WANT to be in boost for it to spool- This car, if I even think about the throttle, those Nagasaki Noisey Bois start screaming lol... not that thats a bad thing to me.

I'm custom tuned with BQ and the boost stays off until I hit it. But that's not often...

In my experience, I get better fuel economy (1-2mpg) on any of the pump gas tunes.

I should clarify, stage 2+.

Has anyone dyno'd stage 2+ recently? (I believe they have updated the maps.) with my jb4 I dyno'd at 357whp/392ftlbs. The mhd stg 2+ days 420hp I assume like 370whp.

Does a BEF have better numbers than just jb4 or mhd stg 2+ individually?

I feel like I've lost some MPG with stage 2+ but it's nothing major. My car likes to build boost all the time even with city driving but it's overall fun to drive because it feels torquey

Stg1+ gets me the same numbers, rather low consumption like 8,5-9,5 liters/100km (depends on driving but mostly highway at 140km/h it is 8,4).
Very slow urban traffic is 13.

you could try linear throttle mapping

My thoughts are that all of the pump gas tunes actually improve gas mileage, its driving habits with the aftermarket tunes that decrease the gas mileage.

More timing and lower AFRs vs the stock mapping will generally result in some MPG gains as long as you are out of boost. I've experienced this with all of my turbocharged cars.

I'm looking for OTS maps because tuning is outside of my wheel house. Is this available in mhd? Or just custom?

I see where you are coming from and that's true in a lot of cars. But the way ours work where it only build boost under high throttle acceleration saves fuel. My concern is that in order to reduce lag and such, do the MHD OTS maps tell the car to always be in boost?

Better AFRs in boost would likely be worse on fuel economy the stock AFRs out of boost...

It's an option when you flash mhd... I don't think most people use it but you could try it out.

I'm not aware of anyone liking the linear throttle option in MHD, but it's there and you should give it a shot. It would certainly keep you out of boost more often vs. normal stage 2+. But when I tried it I really missed the tidal wave of torque you get with minimal pedal input.

when everyone says "rip out the JB4 and flash MHD instead"
JuiceBox has an infinitely adjustable boost control, including pedal position threshold setting. Like the OP wants, I have mine set so that in regular daily driving acceleration, the wastegates are wide open. Improves fuel economy, exhaust note, etc. Spools like mad after about 30% pedal position. MHD is a great flashing tool for a back end flash
Oh and if, for some reason, I need to absolutely minimize turbo lag in low RPMs or silence my exhaust, I can use the steering wheel controls to adjust it in about 5 seconds, while in motion.

What? Who said anything remotely resembling this? The OP was asking about MHD from the beginning. But yeah, JB4 is way awesomer than everything!

sorry ya I wasn't referring to people saying that on this thread. But on this forum I see it all the time. My fuel economy hasn't taken a noticeable hit with JB4 nor the subsequent BEF and trans flash. Adjusting for more aggressive driving post-tune, I'm probably operating more efficiently than stock.

Got it. Already have it.

Point of clarification, the consensus of jb4 with a bef is better than both individually?

I'm under the impression that mhd has a new map version out, 9.0. Is there anyway to look at the OTS codes to see what they are actually doing?

Now I know that the long and short of it is that it tells the car to run more boost and fuels accordingly. Additionally there's likely tweaks to make it run smooth.

I'm interested in what it does during low throttle input.

I got great milage on my v8 maps when I had my 335i. I ran stage 2 from v6 to v8 and for 40k miles, and always got great mileage.

That's my fuelly from my 335i. I had a manual trans but got 25 mpg on my mixed commute no problem if I wasnt stomping on it. That was with crusing at 10 over most of the time.

25 mpg with a tune? How? Does a long commute really make that big of a difference? Maybe it's just me, and bear in mind my commute is only 15 minutes (50/50 highway and city) and I have an xi, but I average 15 mpg on stage 2+. I do have a lot of fun, but even if I drove like a grandma, I couldn't hope for 25 mpg.
