Best practices & equipment for MHD flashing?

So I've done a fair amount of perusing the forum for information regarding the MHD flash in preparation for doing my 07 335i. From what I can gather, most people agree that you should be on at least a 10A battery charger and that you should use a recommended cable from a trusted source (bimmergeek).

Other than that and following the instructions on the pdf, is there anything I can do to maximize my success?

What about device selection? I'm an iPhone/Apple guy so android gear is not something I have hanging around and will have to buy. What's the best/cheapest phone/tablet that people have been successful with?

MHD will test out your cable to make sure it communicates for free.....if it works, it works. I have a couple cheap eBay cables and they both work fine.

I would definitely hook up a charger the first time you flash it. For updates, or changes in your setting...it only takes a minute or two to flash the updates....don't worry about using a charger.

I've flashed my car several times and never had any issues.

I've heard that several times, and that would be great. How soon is soon though?

Best practices? Make sure your basic preventive maintenance is complete before running a tune i.e. putting more stress on the car. Your gaskets so no oil leaks OFHG and oil pan gasket, a walnut blast of your intake valves, and for sure spark plugs and/or coils. If you have not done you spark plugs in quite a while, get ready to experience your first misfires with a tune.

Btw the device I use is a cheap $99 Samsung tablet I bought at Best Buy.

Did plugs/coils about two weeks ago. In the shop right now getting OFHG, waterpump/tstat, walnut blast, VRSF intercooler and charge pipe. Planning to go to 1+ on 91 octane.

Honestly, you don't need to spend very much money at all to flash your car. Instead of using a battery charger, I hooked up an (idling) car to my battery with jumper cables. A cheap Ebay cable works fine for flashing, I've flashed my car over 50 times with my 15$ Ebay cable and never had any issues.

You can get a decent battery charger for under $50 on Amazon....even cheaper if you want. It's always a good thing to have around. Or even one of those jump boxes....they aren't too expensive.

Battery charger should be at least a 30amp with a maintenance function. The DME doesn't like surges and loss of battery power at all. I use a Dewalt 30amp Charger/ Maintainer

If you have used ISTA, you will note the battery should be at 14.6 when using this program. The same holds true with MHD.

- lights off
- radio off
- AC/ heater off
- dont open widows or doors at all.

I've seen the "turn off all draws", but have not seen anyone using a 30A charger. What are you basing that off of?

Hitting the battery with 30amps seems pretty extreme........I use a charger that outputs up to 12amps and I've never had any issue.

Also remember.....after the initial flash that takes 30-40 min, any other flashes only take a minute or two. I never use a charger when doing flashes now.....it's so fast, it's not worth hooking up a charger.
