Weekend cabriolet: which one do I pick?
I haven’t posted in ages. What’s up from Canada.
I’m about to finish my second diploma and I want to reward myself. I’m 34years old. We have a 2 year old and potentially a 2nd child on the way. I’ve owned a B6 S4 V8 cabriolet in the past. I miss the V8sound track. Now I want my topless car back. Unfortunately the S5 doesn’t come in V8. It has to be automatic(for her) fun and quick. I don’t mind doing light mods. Thinking 2013 B8.5 S5 DSG e93 335is DCT or E93 M3 DCT Weekend car, drag strip 1-2 times a year. Drive to the beach on weekends in the summer. Which car would you choose if you were me? Please share your experiences. The V8 M3 sounds amazing but I don’t think I Could keep my license long revving it out. 335i with performance exhaust is nice. S5 is a pig but has more usable trunk space for a family of 4. |

I voted M3 but would really suggest you look at 2-seater roadsters. This is going to be a toy - go full in.
Or get an E91 and be (relatively) unique. It's a more appropriate car for a family of 4 and can be fiddled with to make an enjoyable driver. |

I typically like to accelerate hard. Country roads/twisties. Spirited driving. |

Will you be leaving it stock or modding? If stock get the M3/modding 335is.

Do you really use the top, you do live in Canada, unless its southern B.C. you can't use it much of the year. In that case, open the search to M5, great room for the family. M3 is pretty sweet though, and it will handle better than any Audi and will be more reliable.

There’s just no torque in the s65 motor. Saddle that with the 4,100lb convertible and it’ll take an hour to get to the fun zone in that car.
The n54/55 makes the drop top so much better in all but extreme motoring. |

Good point. Maybe I’ll just stick the N54. I’ve done turbos before. It’s a hard weekend job. Maybe LCI N55 with PE?

Out of those, M3 cab allllll day and it's not even a question. I can only imagine how amazing it would sound with the top down and an aftermarket exhaust. Sheesh. And it'll be much better handling than the 335iS, too.
I almost bought an E93 M3 before my coupe for this sole reason, despite the compromises in driving dynamics vs. the E92/90.

FYI there's a stunning Melbourne Red on Bamboo Beige extended leather, DCT E93 M3 for sale on Auto trader in the mid 30s. Sounds like the perfect car for you.

I’m also a previous owner of an E46 M3 which always felt like it had power “right now” - a feeling I didn’t get until 5k+ with the e93 M3. Likely, the e93 M3 was faster in all respects, but it didn’t feel that way. Odd, maybe it was just me? |

Hadn't thought about that. If you get a nice one, there certainly will be very little or no depreciation. The inline 6 S54 is not as sonorous as the V8. Ahhhh, trade-offs. Not a bad decision to make tho!

I’m the kind of person who worries about the major issues the car may have.the following scare me. E46 m3: subframe tearing (heard it’s not bad on verts), vanos, smg pump. E93 m3: rod bearings. (Expensive engine to replace) E92 335i: turbos, water pump, hpfp. I replaced these before. Turbos were hard. B8 S5: dsg mechatronic unit. Judging by that list. The S5 seems to be the safest bet. But also the most tame vehicle of the bunch. I’ll keep my eyes peeled for a clean E46 M3 vert. 15k should get me a good one. |
