What would you say were the causes of the belt shredding the first two times? Ps pump related, or something else?

I just had my belt, idler pulleys and rollers replaced. I was at the track over his past weekend and my belt snapped. What's the cause of it? I am not sure yet it will be going up on the lift tomorrow. I am not leaking any oil from the OFHG so I suspect maybe the power steering bolt might the issue? I am leaking little oil from the front mail seal so I probably will have to drop the oil pan to be on the safe side to make sure no bits of belt got sucked in.

Leaking oil will cause the front bolt from the power steering pump get loosen that will cause the belt to start walking and brake. What shop are you going to? Front main seal isn't easy to do with out proper tools.

If you drop the oil pan and find pieces of belt in the oil pan, you'll have to take off the VC too in order to get all of it.

I tried using the BMW sealant. The whole process is s real PITA. I didn't get any results after 3 tries. I got results from using Ultra Grey after one try. $8.00 for a tube vs $70.00 (sealant, primer, needle & push rod)

You can rent the tool on-line from

https://www.eeuroparts.com/blog/9560...ental-program/

The front main seal is a b@itch to get right w/out the seal remover & seal installer. I second the Fuer on that one.

I am not taking it to a shop shall I say, but he was the master tech at a performance shop not long ago. The mechanic just texted me and told me he just ordered the crankseal puller tool. It should arrive in couple days. No, the front main seal doesn't seem like an easy job to do. Have you guys replaced your power steering bolts/pulley just for peace of mind of it not going bad? I asked my mechanic to have him take a look at the power steering pulley and bolts make sure they're okay.

Getting it out is the easier part. Installing it is more challenging. If seal goes out of round it won't seal the hub. I suggest you looking for shop/tech with proper tools.

Hmm. I wonder if the extra torque being generated from tunes is making the bolts come loose. Red locktite is a bit overkill. Blue would be a much better choice.

I'll have to check mine this weekend and make sure the bolts are in place before changing my belt and pulleys.

March/09 production N54 here and I was just changing my belt and tensioner and realized that the lower PS pump bolt is gone and the upper one is loose. Glad I searched and found this thread I was beginning to think I was crazy and lost them even though I went nowhere near it! I’m surprised this is a fault from the manufacturer, oh well got to check religiously now to make sure there torqued.

It only hurts when I laugh

Car broke down hard last week. Seemed all electrical driven, dashboard lights going haywire, car overheated then as I was pulling over, coolant outlet hose blew. Towed home, tested the battery it read 4.5 volts. It was 7 years old so I figured replace it anyway. I had been getting some noise from the belt and based on having replaced the alternator clutch pulley last year for seizing figured alternator probably finally went causing all this so replaced that too. Found a scored idler pulley, so replaced the tensioner & idlers while I had it all apart. Putting the new serpentine belt on, wrapping my hand under the power steering pump and it lifts up. Hmmm, I don't think that should happen. Inspected and found the lower front bolt missing, the rear bolt sheared off and the upper front bolt loose. So, I guess that is what kicked off the cascading failures. Anyway, this topic has not gotten the publicity that it should so I thought I would add my experience. This should really be a tech bulletin. So, should I try to extract the broken bolt or just get a new pan?

I’ve had my 2007 E90 335i for about 6 months now and for as long as I’ve owned it I have felt a vibration in the steering only when trying to park the car. It happens only while going back and forth while trying to park the car straight. Like as if the slow rolling of the tires while turning the steering puts a bigger load on the power steering pump or Rack. Does that sound like your symptoms?

.
Early build '07 335i sedan here. During my OFHG swap I decided to go ahead and replace idler/tension pulleys and the belt. This was probably a couple years ago.

Sure enough I found the steering pump loose to the touch with the belt off. All the bolts were loose.
