Hi guys, I'm hoping someone can inform and guide me in the right direction.

I've bought a used second hand 2010 E90 LCI that comes with the visibility package, with the s524A option. Bear in mind I am from the UK, so car is right-hand drive.

On the first day I noticed that when you start up and the car stationary, with the steering pointing straight, the lights auto-level up and down which is normal. However the driver side headlight light then swivels approx 20 degrees to the right and stays in the outward position. Once I start building speed I believe it eventually centralises with both headlights pointing straight. When I switch to normal dipped beams, it centralises back up. This issue only happens in adaptive mode.

I have had had it hooked up on diagnostics check 3 times to see if there are any faults or codes but nothing has come up. I also had an auto electrician test to see if the motor is functioning and he can manually control each light for left, right up and down motion. No problems there.

I have contacted my local stealership who were no help at all. I have contacted independent specialists who do not understand what the issue might be. It has recently passed its MOT as well. My concern is if the driver side light is swiveled to the outward position, it is beaming the light to oncoming traffic.

I contacted bmw customer services today who forwarded me the details to the technical team who had initially informed me that:

• If you have high beam auto assist then yes your beam will be off set and then when you drive it will start to constantly adapt.

• As you have high beam assist no matter what setting you are in the right light will default to the right on first start up

However an hour later, I received a follow up email saying:

"Thank you for your very detailed email. Yet I think the best approach is to book the car in for a diagnosis. (£120). There may be some update to the programming of headlights that might be relevant.(£211). It also appears the left hand headlight is not doing a calibration run"

I don't know where I stand because I don't know if this is actually a headlight malfunction or if its a feature (see link below).

Can someone with a UK/Euro spec e90 LCI with adaptive xenons confirm the behaviour or characteristics of the headlight?

It is normal. People in the US code to turn it on as it is disabled in the states.

Try turning the headlight switch from the far left position (auto) to the far right position (on). If it functions the same way as it does here in the US, this will disable the adaptive feature completely and both headlights will point straight ahead (unless it's coded to be adaptive in both modes, but I doubt that is the case).

If it's dark out, switching it between the two modes quickly (not giving it time to turn off) you should be able to see the light swivel back and forth between the normal position and the angled position that you described.
