clutch costs

What is the average cost of replacing a clutch? Is there any tricks or ways to cut corners to save $$$? Is 60,000 a lot of miles for a 2008 car?

$800 - $1000 at an indy. You shouldn't need a clutch at 60,000 miles.

Unless you sit in really heavy traffic or have really poor clutch operating skills, I doubt your clutch is in need of replacement. Considering you have 97K on your car in 5 years, I don't think is sees a lot of heavy traffic. Of the three BMWs I've had, the E30 went 185K (and my wife had it in NYC for two years) the throwout bearing went tits up but the clutch disk had an estimted 15K left in it, the E37 Z3 went 143K and I replaced it only because the throwout brearing whent tits up in that car too. Once you have the trans, out the replacing the clutch is the easiest part of the job. The E90 has 146K and the clutch is in good shape.

Just some data points to consider...

I know man. I replced the clutch on my E30, removing and putting back the trans was pita. Installed the clutch took me a little over 2 hours.
I just like to be ready and prepared ahead of time.

Lol I don't actually have a manual car yet but I'm looking into one which is why I asked if thy mileage is high. What exactly does a throwout bearing failing feel like?

..the end of the world.
Kidding, but I believe you constantly hear a noise when the clutch isn't pressed in. I've only owned one car and it's auto, so maybe someone else should chip in.

My E90 has 138k miles on original clutch and my E46 has 188k on the original clutch 60k is way to soon. What makes you think you need a clutch?

It will rattle when the clutch is out and the trans is in neutral. Also the clutch pedal will start to feel "grainy" when you push the clutch in.
