Hello all, I have a manual transmission E91 328i and when idling if my foot is NOT on the clutch it makes a constant knocking sound that almost sounds like a woodpecker. If I press the clutch in the sound goes away. I can't hear it from in the car, but standing outside the car it can definitely be heard. Sorry it is a little hard to hear in the video over all the usual engine noises. I have had the car for about 5k miles and the sound hasn't gotten any worse or better.

Thanks!

Might just be the dual mass flywheel which has springs and stuff in it. It’s normal to hear some sounds like that if you shut the car off with the clutch out.

Thanks for the reply. What do you mean by hear sounds when you shut the car off? In the video I posted the car is on and idling.

Garage List
IMHO you won't know what this is until you get the car up on a ramp with a stethoscope and listen to all possible sources of noise...

I feel like it's either the flywheel like the other poster said or maybe the throw out bearing, but I'm not an expert. If anyone else has experienced a similar repetitive knocking sound at idle let me know. Thanks!
