Partially favorable goodwill warranty

So...my 2009 (I'm the orig owner) X5 35D has just under 54,000 miles and is 11 years into service. This DEF/SCR thermistor problem reared its ugly head just now.

The 120,000 mile/10-year warranty extension on this part is out of date for me (I have 11 years, but I'm waaaaay under the miles if that matters). BMW of Fairfax (northern VA, near D.C.) confirmed the SES codes (I have a Schwaben scanner) and between the dealership and BMW N.A., I was told my portion would be somewhere between $864 and $1442. I have nothing good to say about that. BMW should cover this problem entirely.

Like others here on the forum, I would rather fix the thermistor myself for under $50 and four hours of my own labor than be overcharged for an integrated DEF tank thermistor. Thank you to QUICKDZL and others here for the detailed information and insight into fixing this problem as an owner DIY project. Wish me luck.

Interesting...I'm a 6-7 out of 10 type of DIYer, willing to tackle 'most' jobs. What are the basic steps in deleting out the entire emissions system?

Steadyhand, you can just remove the front bumper trim on the pass side and splice through there if you don’t plan to dump the thermistor into the urea tank. Saves you removing all the wheel liners.

I would be glad to splice under the front bumper (pass side). Is there a DIY write up for this?

No, but a YouTube video should be out shortly. Btw, monitor your DPF regenerations. With this code and temp sensor failure they are much more frequent.

I can confirm DPF regenerations are occurring at an increased tempo!! I initially thought I was being picky, but two family members noticed the same thing in our garage.

I will watch/search for the YouTube video. Huge thanks. I'm chomping at the bit to fix this.

Bosch now makes an aftermarket part for $220 which is an exact fit (unlike the VW part). Bosch makes the original BMW one.

https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw...sch-f01c600251

It is very easy to replace. I did not drain the tank. I just removed it from the X5, replaced the tank internals and reinstalled. An upside-down 5 gallon bucket is useful to support it while it hangs a little to unhook the wiring and lines.

If the tank ring is too tight, a free rental tool for removing fuel pumps from Auto Zone will make removal easy. It is an exact fit.

Thank you. This FCP Euro part appears a bit more pricey than a thermistor; however, it is nice and tidy and thus very appealing. Question: does this fix the thermistor problem as well? (e.g., on FCPEuro the description mentions heater, but not temp gauge - in looking at the pics, it does look like all of the pieces/parts are there (so I may have just answered my own question...).

My 2011 335D just got this problem. It's 5 months out of it's 10yr warranty - crap. Do you know if the above referenced part number will also work on a 335D?

Besides that, the rest of the disassembly, repair and install was pretty straight forward. Took me right at 3hrs total. Drove the car around for a couple miles and started and stopped it multiple times, but I Service Engine Soon light is still on. I tried clearing the codes with my ODB dongle and app, but no luck. I'm assuming I'll need to take it to a repair place to get that light and codes cleared?

This type of code may turn the CEL off after a few days of drives. Mine came and went for a few months before I completed the repair.

I'll report a related problem. I've got a 2014 535d, with the N57 motor, at 80,000 miles. It gave the low DEF warning, even though there was plenty of fluid in the tank. It started the mileage countdown toward the no-start permitted end point. The dealer read the code as failure of the level sensor, not replaceable unless whole tank was replaced. Estimated bill $2400.

I chose to go with a DUDMD Stage 1 Tune that deleted the DEF and SCR. There is an electrical coupler near the battery that has to be disconnected as well. Since then, the car's been running really peppy, no warning messages anymore. The tune cost between $500-600, so I saved some money, and have a faster car than I did before. I feel like I dodged a bullet.

With the DUDMD Stage 1 tune, do you have to remove the SCR and DEF from the car?

No parts needed to come off. BTW, JR Tuning couldn't do that at Stage 1, would have had to go to Stage 2 and remove or gut the exhaust.

I may be in luck here as I have one of the very last 335d models put in service and my SCR warranty expires next April.
The only thing I need to know is if the heating unit is integral with the SCR tank as far as BMW is concerned? That would make it eligible under the extended warranty.
I cannot find a separate part number for it so I think it is a part of the SCR tank.

My dealer charges a heft diagnostic fee so I don’t want to take it in unless there is a high likelihood that it will be covered. I also need to remove my JBD a
Like I always do before taking it in.
If this tank is covered, it will make the third replacement under warranty. I just had it replaced a year ago.

Anyone have an answer?
