How many Stage 2 335D's have died?

I'm trying to find a connection between the different 335D's that have been encountering some problems.
If you know anyone with a X35D that blows white smoke, or has a louder engine than normal, please let him reply here.

Can some of you guys also make a video of the engine sound while the oil plug is removed (idle)?
Just to compare the sound with the sound that some of our engines are producing.

1. Mine.
(no problems yet in this video)
White Smoke, large quantities of oil found in and on the downpipe. Loud engine rattling.
Injectors have been tested, carter ventilation has been checked, EGR Cooler replaced...not sure what the issue was...still some grey smoke left, but it's gone since the DPF has been installed again.
There is still a tickling sound coming from the ENGINE.
This sound is very good noticable if the Oil Plug is removed while the engine runs. I will make a video about this issue.

2. This one:

His story:Under idle it would start to put out quite alot of white smoke and then pulling away just after would be again lot of smoke but then clear until the next idling. i had the engine cleaned out as alot of water was found inside with oil but it didnt really clear the issue, and the company told me the turbo's would either go in the next 500 miles or they wouldnt. => Car has been sold.

3. UK member of e90post. Also White smoke. I have requested permision to post the video.

"White smoke on idle and then driving no white smoke until idle again.
Cracked EGR cooler was the issue.
Although now the car is running fine there is a "tinking" noise coming from the engine which maybe injectors or something more."
Sound without oil plug

4. Here is a new one: Also fitted a downpipe, encountering the same issue.. Also from the UK.
No white smoke, but the engine tickling is there.

Bypassing the cooler completely messes with the temperature control of the car. I had this done and spirited driving would make it go well over 100 Deg C (212F).
On a cruise it would drop as low as 60 DegC (140F) ambient 18 DegC.

I suppose in effect the EGR coolant circuit is the primary cooling circuit

One of the possible solutions.
I want to find a solution for other 335D owners, so that they wont have to pay 2500 USD for something that nobody knows how to fix.

@frackje, so what do you think the issue is?
I cant imagine replacing the dpf alone would cause this

To Fix white smoke I bought a E46 320d EGR Cooler from ebay £25
It's the same part used on quite a lot of cars so there are plaenty of these about.

The Tinking noise is something else .. i'm a bit WTF about it

are you talking about the coolant temp? I would think it just needs to be reprogrammed, its unlikely that exhaust gas temperatures which a quick search shows are a minimum of 300F at idle are doing any cooling.

not sure what temperature our thermostats open at, but 212F is not an unusual operating temperature for new cars. Did you compare before/after at all or do you only have data from after?

Is the tinking noise audible with the engine cover on and inside the cabin? There is a huge difference in sound with the engine running between cover on and off, its really actually pretty amazing how big of a difference the cover makes, any video of the tinking available?

The EGR cooling circuit is 2 fold. the 1st is obvious .. it cools the exhaust gas before it's recirculated into the intake.
Obviously the heat exchanged here has to go somewhere so the now heated water is used to heat the car and you inside the car quickly. When this water gets too hot the EGR thermostat opens and passes into the main cooling circuit.

Since the Stage 2 and the EGR cooler cracking I can definitely tell there is a slightly enhanced noise especially when cold. I am uploading a video right now but have also revised my term "tinking" to something wholly different when lifting that cap.. it doesn't sound right .. it really doesn't. A 18th century Blacksmith working on an anvil is about as accurate a term

its tough to tell from the video because it sounds different at idle to me which could just mean the video sound is different from my in person hearing, but mine makes sort of similar noises when I pull the oil cap off. Goes from somewhat quiet with the engine cover on, to some clacking with the cover off, to a hell of a racket when I pull the oil cap. Im not the first owner of this car though so although I think ours might sound the same or similar I cant say for sure that its all good. I also notice that the loudest ticking comes from the center of the engine around cyl 3 and 4, and that I can feel a slightly more pronounced tick on the fuel line just above those injectors as compared to the other 4. This is my first diesel though and although I have a good understanding on the engine in general I dont really know what they are supposed to sound and feel like from up close

yeah, I understand the egr cooler, im saying it doesnt make sense that the coolant temps would be higher if the coolant is having less heat rejected into it. If the EGR is disconnected, shut off, etc then all the heat that would have been exchanged in the EGR cooler now just goes out the tailpipe

Like I said in my first post, there is still a tickling sound coming from the ENGINE.
This sound is very good noticable if the Oil Plug is removed while the engine runs.
I was wondering if 335DEE had the same sound coming out of the engine.....and above video proves that HE DOES!
I'm uploading my video also right now.

sounds the same as mine I think that doesnt have a cracked EGR and didnt have a cracked EGR replaced under warranty.

Since the top ports of our manifold are actually a part of the valve cover, I wonder if the sound is from the closest valved opening and closing, easier to hear because there would be less plastic in the way. Or maybe the valve cover around the ports is prone to a small crack or two, letting sound by easily. Would also explain why we have such excessive oil blow-by, when the engine gets into boost any leaked into the manifold would be really helping blow into the PCV (CCV). Just spitballing
