Which Head Gasket for 335d?
Hey Everyone,
So I am just doing some research into which head gasket to buy as I am feeling I will replace it. I have/had a coolant leak with no visible signs of a leak. I have not had the time to find out if its my EGR cooler or my Head Gasket. Also, I am pretty sure it stopped leaking when the temperature warmed up outside! Seeing as how I am working from home for the foreseeable future due to this whole COVID-19 problem, I was thinking I might tackle my engine when it warms up. But, I need to know which gasket to buy. There are 4 on realOEM and am not sure how to identify which one I need to get for my 2010 335D (North America). Could someone let me know how I would go about doing this? Thank You. |

No I have not pressure tested it yet. I was meaning to, but got sidetracked with work. Then it warmed up outside and stopped leaking. I still want to test it out, but I want to gather as much info as possible for the worst case scenario of a failing head gasket.

But head gaskets aren't common failures on this engine. I would rule out other possibilities before tearing down the engine. And if you do go that deep into the engine, replace the timing chains, tensioner, guides, seals, and all bolts that you remove. Also be a good time to check bearing clearances and condition. |

Thanks ranthum for answering my main question.
I am around 256,000KM most of which are highway. But I will definitely check the EGR cooler first. I was just hoping it would be possible to know which gasket to get before tackling this issue. That of course assuming the head gasket was to be replaced. I just like to be prepared, that's all. What would be the best procedure to test the cooler? I was thinking I would remove it and freeze it over night, and then put some compressed air on the coolant inlets somehow. Just not sure how I would block off the other end yet. I will also check to see if the intake is being steam cleaned. Lastly, a little off topic, but does anyone know where to source the EGR Cooler line connectors? I want to remove the EGR Cooler and block off the coolant connections on the engine. I figured out who makes them but can't find anyone that sells them in the Toronto area. I also found them online on EBay, but only in a kit for deleting the EGR Valve which I didn't want to do as I will not be coding anything. I lived with the check engine light for 2 years almost, I don't really care if it comes back on as long as I know what it is. Again, thanks for your replies. They are much appreciated. |

Unfortunately I found those already as well. My concern right now is shipping with the whole corvid-19 problem going around. That's why I was hoping for something local. I will definitely consider getting them if I cant find them locally.
Thanks, |

Just put the package in the freezer for a day. Virus can’t live at 0F. Seriously, just let package sit for a few days if you really think it comes through thus way. Supposed to be from liquid droplets from an infected person sneezing. com’on!!

Before replacing a head gasket, you should pressure test the cooling system.
I had a slow leak for almost one year until the leak got worse. I then saw some dry white residues from coolant loss and drying. In my car, leak was from hose 11537802632 . The leak was at the Y, where hose split in two hose. https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...diagId=17_0702 |

haha..... very funny LOL. I'm not concerned for getting sick. I was going to leave it for a little while anyways. I'm concerned on just getting the package. A lot of things across North America are being shut down or forced closed. I don't want to order something only to have it get stuck somewhere on me that I can't get for a long period of time.
And a little funny side story. I haven't really driven my car much in 2 weeks as I've been forced to work from home and I went to go check my coolant level in my car. I found a goddamn mouse moving some corn gluten grass fertilizer into my front strut tower mount under the hood! In any case, time for some mouse traps in the garage! Thanks for the replies everyone! |
