Engine losing power

My car is a 2008 328i N/A. When i engage the manual shift and rev high, above 5000, the service engine light comes on and the engine loses a lot of power and become lurchy and hard to drive. If i pull over and turn the car off, then back on, the light is gone and it drives fine. I haven't ran the codes nor do i know if they are stored in a history I am pretty new to this. TYIA.

Are you noticing any misfires? Could be a coil pack or spark plug issue. You could also look into cleaning your VANOS solenoids and swapping the intake and exhaust ones. There is a DIY on here on how to do that if you search. Its cheap and pretty easy to do. Hope that helps!

It does seem a little bit like it is misfiring, i guess it would make sense if it was one of those issues. That does help though! I will look for the diy on cleaning the vanos solenoids. The reason my mind immediately went to a sensor issue is that as soon as it starts acting up all i have to do is restart the car and it is gone immediately. This could be a vanos thing i suppose though. Thanks for your help!

my misfire use to reset itself as well after I turned the car off/on. however, the misfire eventually would not go away.
