Dyno - 2006 E90 325i + 3-Stage Intake Manifold (330i) + CAI + AA Tune
Dyno done today. Long story on the 87 octane...just...go with it.
Other than what is stated, car is stock with some light cosmetic mods. EDIT - New Discovery: "Guys I ended up fixing the DISA issue a few weeks ago. I was cleaning out my air filter and I decided to look around the engine bay. The little connector that goes into the first DISA valve was not plugged in properly - it was turned the other way and it never "clicked". I turned it around and clicked it in, praying that this would be the fix. Get in the car, start it up with no problems, warm it up and take it out. Instant change in performance and responsiveness." *sorry i'm paranoid*
Anyway - it looks like you need some sort of tune, as that huge dip at 4k is likely due to running the stock 325i tune. Also, running premium will make a bigger difference than you probably think. 87 is fine for if you're just going to work or whatever, but if you hit up the dyno, splurge the extra $3 for a tank of at least 91. Hmm he said he has a tune (AA). Could that dip be from a mal-functioning 3 stage intake mani?.. or not properly installed?

Could be. I missed that he has a tune. But it's probably from running 87 octane with the AA tune. They just increase all ignition values by 3 degrees across the board - but if you're running 87 octane, it really only works with stock ignition maps. It's still safe but it will end up pulling more timing overall because the knock retard gets more aggressive.

Yeah ignition timing was my second guess but it seems odd to me that it is happening in that RPM range as opposed to at the top of the band. I'm far from an expert when it comes to that stuff though. /shrug

I was thinking it looks a lot like the first stage wasn't actuating. Mine may be sticking occasionally (had a stored code) and I have really felt that blast off at 4500 a couple times when I suspect it was having issues.
Dunno about the 87, never put that swill in my car :P

it actually makes sense. that's around where the n52 will be at peak torque, and peak torque is where VE (and cylinder pressures) are highest.

Oh I see, you suspect it's pulling more and more timing as we approach that RPM range?

This is why I'm such a big proponent of LOGGING. If this dyno run had been logged, we would know the timing, air flow, temps, cam positions, valve lift and fuel mixtures.

I have not dyno'd my car, but in driving, it feels exactly like that torque plot looks: weak-ass above 3k, BOOM just before 4500. Is that a sign of busted small DISA? I had recently replaced the large one (which had its flapper broken out) and that's when I noticed the change in behavior. It wasn't so pronounced before I'd replaced the large valve.
*I've got the DISA manifold with stock 330i software in my 328.* |

The small one is the one around back. Not the easier to get to. Easiest way to get at it is to pull the air box, throttle body, fan belt, and then set the alternator aside (unbolt but leave harnesses attached.) You can then pull it out from behind the manifold while the manifold is still in place.

Can't you pull in intake pipe off and use a scope to view it while testing with INPA? They might even cycle Open / close with the ignition. I can't remember.

Why do you run such shit gas? Generally the difference between worse and best is $.25. 18 gallons that is $4.50. The cost of a coffee and donut. Assuming a tank lasts you a week that is $.65 cents a day to run preium vs. shat 87.
I would want to get that huge dip fixed. Its starts to go down at 3 and then back up at 4.5k, that is a large enough chunk of your power band to be concerned about.
