S2000, Miata, & MR2 are all for the grounded man. You may also want to try out a Z4 M Coupe and E36 M3.

A "track toy" is a car that will be used almost exclusively used for the track, so it will be in addition to the cars someone already has for daily use. I doubt a "workin' man" has the disposable income to buy something like a Lotus for this purpose.

Completely different price ranges, although the E36 is realistic.

S2k. Miata is even budget-friendlier but I'd rather save up for the Honda.

It's kind of funny that Wiki has this right, but they do:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_S2000

Personally, for a track car, the AP1 is more fun as it has more inherent oversteer and the higher revving engine is more entertaining. Plus you won't notice the plastic rear window as I'd imagine most track S2k's will remove the soft top entirely and use the hardtop.

Its mostly miatas and s2000's if you're actually serious about track time or autocross. You can add Mini into that category (especially once they age a bit more).

Side note: The miata guys dont mess around... they're pretty hardcore when it comes to driving skills.
