More traction on the rear wheels.

Looks, or if you are putting too much power down, and overpowering your tires/wheels.
Most people do it for looks, since I doubt most people have enough power to burn out their tires everytime they try to get on the gas. -Don |

IMO it's for looks. You can say it's for performance but so many people stuff half-junk Hankook 275/30/19s on the rears and say their traction is great because they bought 275 rears, when in reality a nice set of tires tires like F1-DS or g-force KDs in a 245 size would provide much better traction. With a really good set of staggered tires all around, it seems like the car understeers quite a bit at the limit, but I think that is typical tuning of most modern cars from the factory. A non-staggered set up counters that a bit but lowering traction in the rear tires (kind of defeats the purpose?).
When I get wheels I'll probably get a staggered set and lose the option to rotate... looks better and I refuse to run spacers on a non-staggered setup.

It's to keep the attorneys happy and folks love the look. I blame Porsche personally in their on going efforts to make a poorly thought out design work in amazing ways (911 HELLO) they ended up with much much wider rear tires to control the Snap Over steer.
Folk saw that and went "WOW", the Attorneys approve cause it induces understeer which is much safer than over steer for the average idiot, and away we go! Staggered tires all around cause it looks cool... In most cases, that's about the only reason for it.

i wouldnt see why you would need spacers to run 245's all the way around. I was running 235's before I picked up the e46 m3 wheels.
personally i like he staggered RIM look, but have never been a big fan of staggered tires unless you putting down too much power to the wheels. on any stock e9x even with the 335, 245's in the back should be perfectly capable. where in NC are you?

I have 265s in the back on my car and think it looks great, but with the torque my car has, I can still spin them. I run 235s all the way around for track days, and while it handles better, acceleration is more difficult.
