Dumb question from a brother from another mother

I really enjoy my car, it's so nice to me.

What i'm wondering about today is what winding sounds coming from my car. The sounds are mostly louder than an exhaust, and without a PE exhaust it's pretty much all you hear.

What do I mean? On some of the PE mod videos guys are showing their exhaust notes, but in the background you hear a lot of winding, moving sounds that are not really combustion related. The sound correlates to the engine RPMs.

I'm guessing it's like water pumps and alternators, or something, but I'm not wise enough to know specifically what it is.

Sometimes this thing sounds like a damn mini van. Does anyone here know what I'm talking about and also have a way to have those parts shut the hell up?

The water pump is electric and independant from the rpm mechanically, u cant hear it. As for the rest it is calm usually. Maybe check the belt and its tensioner.

Mine whines, too. I noticed a lot when the car was new to me. I don't really notice it anymore. Just part of the car I suppose, NBD.

I think it is just syncros in the transmission spinning up, I've noticed it too don't really think about it much any more tbh.

ya, the sound is mechanical, it's not out of place, but it is just so pronounced. Like i said, louder than stock exhaust and really only noticeable when you're under 30km/h or so... sort of makes your car sound like a robot, and the sound is hard to enjoy when you're driving slow.

so it sounds like there is no solution for that?

The solution seems to be to make other sounds louder.

Lol

Wait I thought you meant when revving the engine while not moving? I don't hear anything while on the move.

I was mostly talking about when cursing at slow speeds with your windows down. when you drive by cars the sounds reflect back into the windows and all you hear is like mechanical stuff, not exhaust.

anyhow, if it's cam noise, then i can't do anything about that.

I'm getting exhaust work done so hopefully I can add in some notes into the noise I hear.

Yeah I'm guessing just timing chain noise. I've been hearing it from day 1 and figure if something were wrong it would've blown the motor by now, 45k miles later.

Hmm oil pump? Anyone want to chime in on this. I know if I rev the engine really high while parked I'll hear a whine of some sort as the Rpms decline. Not sure if it's the 3 stage intake or oil pump. Or I could be completely off.

I had the same issue on my old car, drove me nuts. Turned out to be a combination of things, mostly cheap replacement parts. Serpentine belt and tensioner. I even danced around an alternator or two.

I found the issue by spraying water on the belt and pulleys when to motor was running. The whine went away when soaked. That told me the noise was external. Once I new that, I took my time trying to fix it. I probably had another 50,000 miles on it before I managed took care of all the extra noises.

The E85 had nearly no soundproofing so mechanical noise was bothersome.

If you do this, don't dowse the hole engine compartment with water and don't do it on a hot motor. I'm sure some true mechanic in the group can suggest a better way.

You've inspired me. I'll take a sound clip and post it here for you, hopefully you'll be able to tell me if we are talking about the same thing.

It would be nice if I push the gas and what i hear is engine and exhaust, not a bunch of other stuff.

On the N/A engines the whine, which sounds like a supercharger, is from the Valvetronic motor.

My vehicle has a small whine while cruising at low speed in a parking lot but I think it may be from the auto trans oil pump which will spin the same speed as the transmission input shaft. It's not really that loud on mine. The Valvetronic motor is much more noticeable when the engine free revs to higher rpm.

Valvetronic motor is very quite and only operates when the "throttle" position is changed. It will not create a constant whine. It can't , It continuously stops and changes direction as the engine load varies.
