New rims/tires on e92 335i, Steering wheel shake. Help?
I purchased some used M3 220M style rims for my 2007 E92 335i (here is the thread). They look great, and were as advertised. I bought the tires from tire rack (265/30 and 235/35ZR-19 Sumitomo HTR Z III).
Unfortunately, starting around 35mph I get a very noticeable wobble in the steering wheel. It never completely goes away, but is less noticeable at highway speeds. The shop I had them put on at (a local european import shop) told me about the wobble, and said it was not a balancing issue (although he did not say how they knew that). His suggestion was to wait a few hundred miles and see if it evens out, but honestly after driving it a bit I don't see that happening. I just drove it to work, and have been thinking about the best way to deal with it. Maybe I should take it to an NTB or something and have them re-balance the tires? Any advice? |

You need to have your tires balanced. It is most likely that, orrrrr....you need an amignment. IM BETTING its the balancing. I had the same issue when I had some temporary tires put on a couple weeks ago. They were both used tires and unmatching. Never got balanced on instal. Yesterday, my new tires came in and I had them installed the right way with a fullbalancing and everything. NO MORE SHAKE IN MY STEERING WHEEL!

Balance them and if possible try to see them do it. you want to see if the wheels are bent. if you didn't have the shaking prior to installing those wheels/tires then either balance as we most agree but also bent wheel. if it shook before on old wheels then I would turn my attention to the control arms.

Take it to a tire shop that has a Hunter Road Force balancer and let them do their magic.

check the wheels
check the wheels for internal warpage. I found out three of mine were warped on the inside and had to be replaced...the guy at Discount Tire called me in to personally show me...three at the dealer cost 1599 including labor...no tires, just wheels.
I had vibration at 65-73 mph. now all gone. Good luck! Viet Quote:

since they were used they wore out somewhat to the other vehicles settings. It is true that the tires can wear to the wat your car is set up but best bet is to get an alignment and balance and even if it still wobbles slightly it could possibly wear the tires out to the point the wobble goes away somewhat.
FYI, although money may be tight, especially when dealing with BMW MB etc, downgrade your tires some since chances are you wont be going z rated speeds etc. and buy new. |

My rear wheels are also rubbing really bad -- way worse than they should. And the rear of the car almost looks like it is sitting lower than it should. When you say control arms, do you think I should just replace the front and rear control arms with the TRW M3 knockoffs, and get some rear M3 subframe bushings? The ones I was looking at are here: http://www.ecstuning.com/BMW-E92-335...Arm/ES2586480/ http://www.ecstuning.com/BMW-E92-335...Arm/ES2622633/ http://www.ecstuning.com/BMW-E92-335...Arm/ES2538694/ Sorry to ask a suspension ish question here, but you mentioned control arms and it got me thinking about how the car squats currently. I need to stiffen up the rear to accommodate the mods anyhow, so maybe this would kill two birds with one stone? |

Oembimmerparts.com has good price with oem parts. Esstuning doesn't state the brand
QUOTE=Bluesun;14233667]The more I think about it, there was as minor s hake before changing the rims. Do you think moving from 17" rims with runflats to 19" staggered M3 rims (non runflats) would make the shaking more noticeable/more extreme?
