M57 timing chain question

Hi everyone.

1. The ticking sound, at the very front of engine, is it timing chain or the valve lifters?
Opening the oil cap, there is no clicking in there, quiet.
Bonnet closed - is barely heard, bonnet opened - can hear it in very front of engine (chain or lifters area).

As this sound is very specific, I thought someone has had this sound and can clarify.

It would be a preventive move to clear it before it could get any worse.

Engine runs well, no rattles, no problems at torque or starting the engine.

Thanks a lot for your time.

The timing chain on the M57 engines is quite reliable but that does not mean 100 percent reliable.

Yes, well it's a good idea to change it anyways, mileage is 262000 km.

Was wondering, cause other same engines mostly don't tick this way.

Sure it's on the accessory belt tensioner making all that noise?

yes, that is why I will try to make the important maintenances, not to expect some sudden failure.
Here the max speed on roads is 62, in winter rather 60 or lower.
So the engine don't get such heat, which I guess rather preserves the engine.

Doesn’t sound like a chain, guide or tensioner issue. 262k is 157k, which isn’t crazy high. I don’t see any reason to swap the timing chain.

Very pleased to know.
Today I didn't hear this ticking
I changed the oil from 5w-30 to 5w-40 lately and the oil level was also quite under minimum when the car was brought on place.
Maybe it has recovered and got some oiling.

Okay, but I've heard and seen from videos that when opening the oil cap, there is a loud knocking inside, when vacuum pump is faulty.

I hear nothing but silence when opening oil cap engine running...

Did you ever figure out what this was? I have the exact same spiratic tapping noise coming from my M57. I can't hear it from the engine bay though... I just hear it from the sides of the vehicle (so usually in drive-thrus)
