Here's a tricky one for those hands-on enthusiasts

Hello forum members, I'm baffled by this new trick of my 2006 330i, hope I can find an explanation here;
just recently replaced the shifter lever mechanism with the BMW Performance kit, surprisingly not too bad since I was able to replace and install the new lever without removing the exhaust and such parts, big difference in travel and feel IMO and really like the change, however since the last 3 days, every time I select reverse oddly the interior roof liner lights turns on (both front and rear), no clue why is doing it, found that switching the light off resolves momentarily the issue, that is until I have to backup again..any advice will be greatly appreciated, thanks

I can't help but laugh at this, only because how much it would send me off the deep end if it happened to me. I don't see how swapping the shift lever could cause this. I have done the same swap and I don't remember any wires being near or around the working area. The only lights that come on while in revers are the backup lights, so it seems somehow tied to that. How? God only knows.....

Do the interior lights turn off when you leave reverse or do you need to manually do it every-time?

I would check to make sure you didn't pinch any wires under the console.

I have an AT, but i've had to fix a broken DS mode and that was simply a couple overstressed wires that were too thin and either broke or their jackets wore off. That makes me kind of think it's a short/bad wire.

Just speculation though. Either way it's not hard to pop the center console off and look....that's where all those wires are for an AT anyway.

It does sounds weird isn't? I neither recall seen any wires around or under the shifter rubber dust cover boot, at the beginning, once I changed reverse gear the lights were off but now I have to manually turn them off, go figure..all I hope is that it doesn't continue increasing the unknowns..

Thanks for the advise, I'll dive in and see if there's a crunched wire somewhere

DS mode is drive(sport) in auto vehicles.

FRM is one of the modules for lighting I believe.

What happens with your reverse lights when you put the car in reverse?

When you activate the interior lights, are the reverse lights on too?

Good question, actually I was wondering that, I'll check once a find a storefront to back up and verify, will see if that trick also affects the exterior reverse lights...

I'm late to the party, but the first thing I'd do is unplug the harness from the reverse switch on the transmission and then put the car in reverse and see if the interior lights come on. Other than being a module issue like Hass suggested I can't see how the circuits are getting crossed unless the module is doing it. Replacing the shift lever components has nothing to do with the operation of the reverse light circuit and you wouldn't need to even get near the reverse light switch to do the work.

I hate to say it, but scanning the car with a BMW tool may help solve the issue.

A manual transmission can be set to "comfort", "sport", and "track" modes simply by the technique and speed at which you shift it; it doesn't need "modes", modes are for manumatics that try to behave like a real 3-pedal manual transmission. If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."

Thanks for the advise, first I'll try to figure where's the reverse switch harness, unplug it and check if that weird cabin light comes up, I don't have a BMW scanning tool but it seems like it might not be a bad idea to find one and keep it for current and (and hopefully not..) future issues, any recommendation on which or where to find one?
