iPhone integration alternative

Here is an alternative to the notorious Y-cable: Blackberry Stereo Gateway. It can be used with any phone supporting A2DP (stereo over Bluetooth) profile. It will also work with a PC/laptop outfitted with a BT adapter that supports A2DP Source.

It does require power-over-USB, so a charging adapter (or 6FL USB port) is needed for its operation. Once paired with the phone/PC/laptop and plugged in the AUX port, it does not require any interaction - just plug it in a USB adapter and forget about it. It will turn on automatically when the car is started.

I will use it extensively as I like to listen to streamed music (Pandora, Last.FM, etc.) and use a Navigon iPhone app. Using Navigon with the 6FL cable requires that iPod be running all the time (you can not stop/pause music) which is a bit of a nuisance sometimes.

The sound quality is excellent - same as over a wired connection to AUX.

The downside is that you can not control the music player from the steering wheel, but it is not that important as you can not control the stream anyway.

Hope this info could be useful to someone.

so how long does your battery last when you have all of that running with the iPod not directly connected to the 6FL? Like an hour?

Actually, iPhone. A lot longer than that, covering most local trips even with Navigon running. I charge the phone as needed, though. On longer trips it is plugged into the 2-nd USB port (have low-profile Belkin USB adapter instead of the cigarette lighter).

Again, it may not be a big deal for iPhone/iPod, but useful for other phones left out of the 6FL game.

Thanks for the great idea! You can still make and receive calls with the car's bluetooth, right?

Yes, you can! That's the beauty of it. It complements the car's stereo which should have A2DP profile built-in and offer a BT sound source among others: FM, CD, AUX, USB, BT.

How is the sound quality streaming the audio over bluetooth?

I have the kensington liquidaux and I'm pretty happy with it, but I have always been curious about the A2DP streaming stuff. My friend has it in his Acura and seems to like it - but its built into the stereo.

Wait, does this apply to pre-3/07 build models 2007 models too? Mine was built 2/07 (before updated iDrive and 6FL was offered), and I'm not sure it would show Bluetooth as an "audio source". Shoot, I didn't even think later model cars had A2DP support! How does this work, can I pair my iPhone to both my car's bluetooth and the stereo gateway? I would love to listen to Slacker radio in my car over 3G wirelessly, but still be able to have full iDrive functionality with my phone!

Nevermind, don't worry about answering this question. Yes, I just read that the iPhone 3GS can pair to multiple devices, and that the 3 series does not have A2DP support (I misunderstood when the OP was saying that we SHOULD have A2DP support, he was saying that BMW should have built the cars with A2DP rather than it's supposed to, ha).

Very Cool. I just got back from a road trip on which we streamed Pandora to the radio via the regular 6FL cable. After bringing up Pandora, I just plugged my iPhone in like it was an iPod and low and behold, music came out. I was surprised at just how well it worked, even when in the mountains. Although there were a few times where it did cut out, overall it was on par w/SIRIUS. The future is starting to get awesome!
