Passive xovers often invert absolute polarity AND they insert additional phase shift (think of phase shift as a frequency-dependent delay). Active crossovers (except for well-executed DSP filters) do the same thing.
A driver WITHOUT any crossovers and WITHOUT any other drivers will cause some phase shift at certain notes. This is one of the kinds of distortion that always happens to a signal as its played back.

fair point, this may not be the correct forum... I like it here (as well as X5 and Z3 boards) since things are more specific to the application. But I get where you are coming from.
