Does everyone get a winter setup consisting of rims and tires?

Im not a huge fan of my sport package rims and would like to throw snow tires on them and get a whole different setup for summer.

Is there anyone in the area that has a similar setup.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I chose to go with a different rim and tire for the winter. Two reasons. One, I think winter tires or all-seasons are necessary in chicago if you run with a summer tire. Two, it is nice to get a change between winter and summer. I chose 162's for the winter with Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3D's. Not sure what rim I will use in the summer yet. Too many choices!

I keep 3 sets of wheels/tires for my cars -- a summer set, a winter set, and a track set. I have a 335 w/sport package and use the OEM set for summer. I purchased an 18" non-staggered setup for winter and will be purchasing a 17" non-staggered setup for track.

You can certainly stick snow tires on your current OEM rims and then get new wheels in the summer and stick your original tires on those.

I am putting the Dunlops on my sport stock rims and will put the Dinan 19" wheels on for summer.

Ive checked Tirerack and they dont show any options, maybe too late in the season.

Your rear tires aren't supposed to be big for the winter. You want narrower tires than stock for the winter. This allows you to cut through the snow, instead of trying to plow it.

I have a winter set and my sport package wheels. Now that I have a new set of rims, I will use the new rims for summer, but continue to use my 17" rims for the winter. The OEM rims may find there way into the garage corner to only be resurrected if I ever feel like selling the car.

I have a complete winter setup I bought from TireRack: 17" ASA JH3 wheels and non-runflat Dunlop Winter Sport M3 XL tires.


Here is how it looks. So far it has performed nicely. Very minimal slippage.:

We put Hankook Icebear on the 335i just before the big snow earlier this month. Stock tires sizes, including staggered setup, mounted to a second set of stock 162 rims. $790 installed for all 4 tires at Discount Tire. I think they are sold out for the season now, however.

Car handles well. Not perfect, but very driveable - the wife has no complaints. And best of all it looks stock, and handles 95% of stock on dry roads.

Anyone else drive in the snow yesterday morning? Wow, what a blast. No problem keeping up with the SUVs and other 4WDs out on the roads. Also, we saw an Audi Q7 spun off the road (I stopped and offered to help - the two guys seemed pretty embarrassed), and CLS sideways on the shoulder, plowed in with its hazards on (looked like stock rims, my guess was he had no snows).

Yes I drove yesterday morning in the snow. Just a quick ride down to the gym. Worst part was hearing all the scraping under my car... just makes me cringe every time.

The winter set up I've been very happy with. Great traction, minimal slippage (no worse than my wife's Lexus SUV), and the look is decent.

I just called tire rack and they told me what they had to fit the staggered setup and the shipped them to my local shop and they put them on.

I think they are sold out now though. I tried tire-rack when I was looking a few weeks ago and they did not have any more in the stock 18" tire sizes. At this point it might be tough to find them in stock anywhere at all.

They did a group buy on this board awhile back. But you can get it from their website.

I highly recommend them. They had a brief paint issue with a subcontractor but fixed it and sent me new ones right away. Very cool guys who want to do right for the aftermarket buyers.

I too have Stinger's rims, but with Winter Sport M3 DSST's. They're not the strongest winter tires in the world but they beat the hell out of all-seasons.

If I were to do it again, I'd get the Sport Editions that look almost exactly like the JH3's because they fit an OE BMW center cap. My JH3's have roundel stickers on the Asa caps, which just seems kind of ghetto.

I think Mike Miller says around once a year that it's possible to buy too much winter tire for a 3-series, and last month I found out the hard way what he means. I pulled into a snowy curb parking spot in Milwaukee and managed to high-center myself on a ridge of ice through the middle of the spot. Snow tires don't help when the car's not resting on them

This is an excellent point. Oh well, it really isn't that bad looking and the setup is pretty affordable with the JH3's.

The big issue with winter driving an E93/E92 is ground clearance....

Have a 335xi, live in northeast Ohio. I swapped out the runflats for the new Goodyear F1 all season's when I got the car. Then, also have a set of Borbet rims from Tire Rack, which have Goodyear GW3 Ultra Grip "high perf" winter tires on them. The GW3's on the Borbet's are great in the snow, can climb glaciers w/the xDrive. And actually, F1 AS's do well in the snow.

In summer, I have one of the GW3's in the trunk as a spare. In winter, have one of the F1's as a spare. So I sacrifice some trunk space for peace of mind and security year round (got a jack kit too). Whole reason is I did not want to have to deal with the runflat "concrete cylinders" (not a big fan of those).

Only glitch is that the Borbet's DON'T have the TPM stems - get dash errors on that, but, it's expected. Price you pay for ultimate winter protection AND tire pressure monitoring in summer (even without the TPM stems, the antilock brake flat monitoring system still works regardless).
