My rim is cracked! What are my options?

Hi everyone,

I have various rim issues.

I had to refill air in my rear left tire 3 times this week, so I suspected that my tire is punctured and I took it to a shop to replace. They pointed out to me that the rim has 3-4 cracks on the inner circular edge and most likely, air is leaking from there, because I have run flat tires.

So now, my options are

1. Get the cracks welded - $100
2. Buy a new set of rims - The person was selling me a set of 4 used rims for $300
3. Buy a single new rim on eBay - I am unable to find the same style that I have. Is this even a realistic thing to do?

My car is a 2008 E93 with 70k miles on it. It has the sports package so has staggered wheels - 225/40R18 in the front and 255/35R18 on the rear.

If there are cracks in one rim, is it reasonable to expect cracks on the other rims too in the near future?

Isn't the problem with buy used rims is that their could be damage the seller does not tell you about?

Buy the used set for $300. You can meet the seller at some tire shop to inspect them. If OK you will have spare wheel in case another one cracks.

Find out the name of your rim (if stock, google your year and model, take note of the name when you find a pic...name will be "Style ###")

You can buy used rims, sometimes original new rims, and a ton of companies offer reproduction singles for people in your predicament

is it common practice to replace all RFTs with regular tires and carry a spare? In that case, the rim crack probably doesn't matter?

First of all, "most likely"?
If the shop didn't straight out test everything with a simple soap and water solution to verify exactly where the leaks are occuring I wouldn't trust anything they said.

Do it yourself and go from there. If wheel, buy another undamaged one off a reputable ebay seller. If tire, use ebay again and buy the same tire with similar tread depth as the other 3 tires. Or whatever.

me personally i would get a new set of rims to add a new look to the car. if you dont care about that, you can buy used oem rims.

I would check the wheel for sale forum, but your best chance would probably be your local bmw group on fb.

Go on realoem with your Vin, find the model number of you rim and buy on car-part.com or eBay or craigslist.

I was just in the same situation last fall. I just had my OEM wheels gone over. Two were bent and one had a crack. Getting them fixed up and having winter tires mounted and balance came to under $200. I decided to go that route for piece of mind over buying a used set and possibly running into problems with them down the road.

I'll try to help out a bit, but some things are not clear.

Does your car have original equipment BMW wheels on it? Unless I'm mistaken, the E9X sport package came with 17" wheels (mine did) @ 8" fronts and 8.5" rears. There are many different wheels BMW offers for the E9X, so the original purchaser of your car (if not you) could have up-ordered to a 18" wheel package.

If you post a pic of the wheels, I'd bet someone on here will know what style of wheel it is. That's of they are BMW original equipment wheels. Or you can go to RealOEM.com and look at the Wheels section which has drawings and sizes of all the available E9X wheels. The drawings are not perfect, but close enough. Finally, BMW wheels have the style code cast into the aluminum near the center hole.

What I find a bit unusual is the rim is cracked on the inside of the wheel at 3 or 4 different places. If you hit a pothole hard enough to crack the wheel lip, it must have damaged the tire as well, yet the tire shop didn't mention it, and it wouldn't have cracked the lip in more than one place. It appears to me that the tire shop that mounted the last set of tires, damaged the wheel. If the shop can have the wheel repaired for $100 then go look for a local wheel repair shop and have them repair the wheel. Any blemishes from the repair would be on the inside of the wheel anyway.

Seems a bit expensive though, looks like I can get a cheap local deal to change all 4 with a different rim style. TemjinX2 , I'm open to upgrading the look of the car, any rim recommendations?

Buy new set of rims. Even if a rim is repaired, it will never be back to 100% OEM spec.

ECS tuning has decent sets of rims for cheap. I know guys that have bought them and no issues.

everyone has their own tastes. id recommend going go the picture forum. go to the thread with your color car and look at the wheels other ppl posted to see what style you like.
