Regen every day?
So yesterday I went for a longish drive (~2.5 hours total, in 3 trips with 5-20 minute stops in between) and when I got home, I went back out to the car a few minutes later and the fan was running. No big deal, it's just doing its regen cycle.
This morning, I make the short drive to work (this is the very next time the car has been started), and when I get there and shut the car off, the fan is still running. Both yesterday and today I've had to drive in manual mode because the tranny wants to hold on to a gear until 3k under normal, moderate acceleration. I assume this is because it wants more heat. This could also explain why my fuel economy has been in the toilet the past few tanks (25-26mpg average, down from 29-30). Anybody else experience regeneration on consecutive days? Car is stock except for the JBD at 100%, which has only thrown a code once when I nailed it on a cold engine about 2 months ago. |

Not an expert but here's my opinion...
The fan on doesn't mean that the regen is happening. It means engine was hot when you stopped and fan keeps running to cool it off. Happens if you were driving aggressive just before you stop. And the fact that you put it in manual to avoid the gear to stay on longer, doesn't that stop the regen? So maybe it's been a few times it tried to do it and by doing that you stopped it before it was complete? Let's see what others have to say... |

Regen happens when you drive (correct me if i'm wrong), typically at a steady speed on the highway. If the fan stays on after you shut off the car, the ECU has determined that something is too hot and so the electric water pump and fans will run until its cool, most likely the turbo. It can run up to 15 minutes (I think) after the car has been turned off.

I was definitely not driving aggressively just before I stopped. I hit half throttle once about 3 minutes prior to the end of my 12 minute drive. The engine was probably barely up to operating temp.

I would say this is normal based on my experience with my 2011 D at 18K miles.
What I have seen is that when regen starts, if it doesn't complete its cycle, the fan will stay on when turned off and the next time you start the car it will attempt to complete the previously interrupted regen cycle. I confirmed this by the "heat smell" I always get during regen while stopped at a light with the window down. (And the poor mpg) -Ed

Whether I'm blazing through the freeway in the mornings to work or slugging through traffic in the afternoon going home, there's always regen after the car is turned off. So yeah, it's perfectly normal.

Everyday seems like a lot. You might need to do 85Mph for a few minutes to cook out ash.

I found running the JBD caused lots of "fan time" when off...whether or not the regen was happening I don't know. I also noticed shifts were not as smooth...not terrible, but not as silky as the shifts without it.

+1. I thought it was just me but I too noticed a bit of jerky shifting with JBD. Currently running it at 100%.

Perhaps I am a bit of a noob...but why would anyone want to run a tune when these engines already have a predisposition for carbon / soot build up?
The tune only accelerates the level of soot that will build up right? Seems like the loss from a tune is greater than the gain. Sure you gain a few ponies..but you are in the dealer much more for service. Unless you are the type running the tune while under warranty and will dump the car prior to 50k miles and pass on your sooty problem car to someone like me looking for a nice used one. |

A car with a tune probably won't have more carbon/soot than a D driven by a "normal" driver because the car with the tune will likely experience a lot more WOT time and burn off much of that carbon/soot. But of course that's still worse than stock D driven very hard. When I test drove my D, both rear tires were bald. The dealer installed new tires as part of the deal. I knew I would drive the car at least as hard as the guy who previously owned it so it didn't bother me. The car obviously logged a lot of WOT time so carbon hopefully wouldn't be an issue and hasn't been so far. |

With a cheap and simple eBay OBD dongle and the Torque app for a smart phone, you can eliminate all doubt if the vehicle is doing a regen.
Using Torque, EGT1 will rise to ~1150F and EGR will be reduced to ~0. Also, the Bavarian Technic tool shows lots of info on the DPF status if you're interested in more data (soot and ash loading, differential pressure to see if its getting plugged, how long its been since your last regen, etc). My car on my normal commuting schedule of 2x15 miles a day does a regen about every 400 miles. On long continuous drives its closer to 500 miles. Usually takes ~10 minutes to complete. With the BT you can even watch the soot level decrease as its getting burned off, which is kinda neat. |
