Fitting Focal ES100K speakers in E92 doors

I've been having some fun and games with this the last few days. My speakers were supplied with CT25BM08 adaptor rings. For the life of me I couldn't see how you're meant to get these to sit flat as there's nothing to accommodate the heads of the three bolts needed to secure the speaker to the adaptor.

I figured I could do better with my 3D printer... the first attempt looked good, but unfortunately the end result sat the speaker a bit too deep in the door causing a slight squeak when winding the window up and down.

So, a redesign was needed to mount the speaker on the other side of the ring. The result accommodated the gasket supplied with the Focal grills nicely.

And the speaker then sat in this, secured by four button head M4 x 16mm stainless bolts.

The nyloc nuts were held captive in the ring.

Some 10mm wide, 3mm thick neoprene draught excluder then provided a seal to the door.

The new design sits the speakers 4.4 mm closer to the door. No more interference with the window!

I made a mirror image ring for the other door.

And the tweeter adaptor rings described HERE completed the effort.

So, I'm wondering if anybody else is interested in benefitting from my efforts? The mid rings take about 7 hours each to print as they're pretty much solid for strength, so I'm not exactly planning mass production. The tweeter rings are a bit quicker at about 30 minutes a pair.

If you're interested PM me and we'll sort something out.

Steve

Oh, one more thing: where did you mount the crossovers? They don't look too big but I haven't opened the door yet to see where they could go

In case you dont get an answer for this one in particular, I believe TechnicPnP.com makes a very nice adapter in its own right.

Ctuna had a couple of pics of how he placed his. http://www.e90post.com/forums/attach...3&d=1329017429
While models vary, they generally all have space behind the pocket.

E92's have thinner doors some people have removed the case
on there crossovers. Generally the corner of the door works.
The pro's would mount them in the trunk and run another set
of wires to the doors.

Yeah, I’m going full active so nix on the crossover. Allows more flexibility. Only one that might give you more/equivalent options is the Focal Utopia 3-way No.7/5, but thats a $4000 unicorn that needs to be mounted somewhere.

Hoping the JL Vxi amps are everything they seem to be.

Thanks guys. I use an 8 channel DSP amp so active crossovers. Much more tunable.

Well, what can I say.
I have been fortunate enough to be able to purchase a set of Steve's 3D printed speaker adaptors.
They are absolutely awesome. Really solid and better than anything else I have seen out there. Some manufacturers could learn a thing or two.

Now I am happy to attack, install these into my car, i'll get some pictures when I get around to it.
Awesome product and an awesome guy to deal with
Thanks Steve

Trying to get any sort of mount like this in the US is really a problem. Really nice work. Not sure I'm good enough at the CAD to work this out, but I might try.

Thanks Mark. If Chris gets on with them maybe I should stick them on eBay?! I did this for myself, but they look like they could be popular.

I pick up my Focals Friday. Didn't have them in stock. Should have ordered them over the phone. Wasn't a good day, I gave a Nissan Micra a smack in the bum, my fault.
Wasnt game to order them until I had your adaptors.
We'll get there. Just have to be patient. Looking at the Focal compact 4 channel amplifier. Then some recoding.
I reckon you will sell them on Ebay. You have a great product. Really solid, well thought out and executed

Awesome work on the adapters Steve
Always amazed by the talented people here inthe forum and their generosity in sharing with the community

Just a quick question
The adapters are made for the 4" focals right?
Do you think the template can be scaled up and printed to suit the 6 1/2" focal 6W2Be ??

Unfortunately the rings for the 4” speakers are as large as my printer will handle. Also I’m not sure what a standard BMW fitting would be for the larger speaker.

So you're going to put the tweeter and the 3" in a pod? I'm not sure if you need to. Consider having the 3" in the stock position and a custom mount of the 6.5" in the lower door (or kick panels — though not sure how you'd do the drivers side well). You could even angle the 3" slightly since you'd have a lot of room to play with. Would look cleaner and I don't think it hurts you much. Dunno, but while the monitor theory is sound, I really never cared for the pod setups or believed that the imaging was great. I worry with everything so high you just get blasted with no depth. Well, only time will tell for sure.

But I like active. The cross adjustment they have is actually very good, but put a little more money into an amp like the JL VX800i and you'll be able to play with all those options in a less confusing/cumbersome way (plus you'd have to find another install location for that monster cross). Also didn't quite care for the dial pots unless you could lock them in place.

In any case looks like fun. I'll be watching.

These are twice the design of the european ones,
& would be perfect for my needs tbh.
Well Done, Sir.

I would gladly pay for 2 of these mounts, on ebay or otherwise.
-and would promise not to ask one single installation question. :P

& as a fellow maker (& not-so-subtle brownnoser),
thank you for creating such a space efficient design.
