Price Check: 2011 335IS

Hello,

Came across a 2011 335is, 52K miles and 3 owners. Clean carfax. I would be the 4th. Yes, I know: that is flag 1 considering the number of owners. But 1st owner was in Cali, I've heard people generally drive less there. 2nd was a suburb out of Chicago. 3rd owner has had it for a year and he has worn out the clutch on it entirely. Drove it with the slipping clutch and still felt good tbh. Must be because I've never owned German haha.

What's a fair price and anything else you guys think I should be wary about? Also, how much would setting up a new clutch set me back by? I will get a pre purchase inspection done but needed some suggestions from you guys first.

Thanks for stopping by!

e92 or e93? Manual or DCT? These both make a big difference in valuation.

I picked up a loaded 2011 (harman kardon, idrive, etc.) with 54k miles back in January, specs are in my sig. Clutch and brakes were replaced before I bought it too.

I was in the market for an iS for 4-5 months before I bought mine, which was a great spec with low enough miles at the right price. I know the market pretty well, PM the VIN and I'll give you my feedback.

Also - 3 owners for a 7 (or actually already 8) year old car is not too bad.

New clutch parts are around $350, $1200 w/ install. If the flywheel is smoked, then add probably a grand to that number for a new one, and if he's allowing test drives in that condition it probably will be.

Look for OFHG, Valve Cover, and Oil Pan Gasket leaks. Probably needs a walnut blast and plugs. Watch for long cranks, it's a sign of bad HPFP. If you have the PPI pull the plugs, you'll be able to tell if there is a bad injector.

The bad clutch will scare off every other buyers, and if he can't spring for it he's probably tight on cash. Ripe for negotiation.

EDIT: can you share the car so we can look at the post? If it's owned by the BMW Tech you mention in your other post, there may be other issues. Clutch job shouldn't scare him off.

Somewhere around $15k I'd say.

Yes GATORB8. You have the right post. I want a manual and since these don't come by that often, Idk if I should be hasty with my decision. He is tight on cash he says. Wants a truck instead. But that's a common excuse I've heard from sedan sellers haha.

Biggest flag is no one else has approached for the car. A normal clutch fail shouldnt scare people off that bad. He is asking $17K.

Run the VIN through BMW's recall site. See what has and hasn't been addressed. Factor in what a new clutch and flywheel would cost and deduct that at a minimum from his asking price unless he wants to have it evaluated on his dime. Buying cars with issues can be a great deal if you know how to work on them and fix them on the cheap, not so much when you need to take it to the shop, especially these cars.

Clean retail is $16k-17k, private party is $14k-15k before factoring in repairs.

Based on the above details, I would be weary. The price is very good for the package/mileage, but I reckon there are issues beyond just the clutch. The price is low enough to add on a 3rd party warranty, I've never done that myself so I can't offer any insight into that.

I know these cars don't pop up too often but I would hold out, this isn't the one.

^ why?

Of course there are issues beyond the clutch.. it's a 335. But that's to be expected of any used 335... you're going to find some (small) issues that need addressing. Let's be real, who takes a car that they're about to sell and then drops a bunch of money into it in order to make it pristine? No one.

Also I'm confused as to why you're saying that the asking price (17k) is very good, when the rest of us are coming up with a different opinion there. If the car was in great shape, with a good clutch, $17k wouldn't be crazy. But as it sits?... no way.

It's a low mileage, manual 335is coupe which are rare to come by on the used market nowadays. To go further, the TiAg/Black combo make this car 1 of 23 produced, plus it's well-packaged with iDrive & Harman Kardon.

At only 52k miles, this car is easily worth >$20k in good working order and good cosmetic condition. A clutch job costs less than $3k which is why I'm weary of some undisclosed issues.
