F1 - The Killing Years
Anyone see this last night on BBC4. So sad to see so many drivers killed, horrific footage at the end with David Purley trying to save Roger Williamson, just awful.

Yeh the David Purley footage was incredible and very sad. When you think of Graham Hill stopping for Jackie Stewart and then to see all those guys just driving past and not even slowing down. Shocking.
Shows how far things have come in terms of safety Also felt really sorry for the Dutch guy who was forced by Colin Chapman to race the Lotus 72 and died. Different world. |

I just watched it on iPlayer.
Horrific footage with some iconic figures, but life just seemed to be so cheap in that era. Agree on the comments made about David Purley, his futile attempts to stop the other race cars and to try and extinguish the flames of Williamson's car are just desperate and very sad. I have never heard of that incident before and I considered myself a long standing F1 fan. |

I have not seen the programe.
Purley was a hero. Legend! Such a sad story. De Angelis death at Paul Ricard in '86 was similar. Ended up upside down wrong side of the fence testing and no marshalls were present and he died of smoke inhalation. Two deaths caused by lack of training or lack of medical/fire staff in attendance. Disgusting. A similar thing happened in Indonesia a few years ago in F3, luckily without a fatality. James Winslow being the hero. Out in Asia the marshalls and track staff are Ill equipped and poorly trained. Harking back to what the 70's was like in F1. They have a lot to learn and are a few decades behind us in Europe and America.

Very sobering.
There was a terrible crash in 1977 at Kyalami that killed Tom Pryce. You might want to wiki what happened before you jump to search on you tube - I'm not including a link.

Tom's accident was devestating. It really should not have happened. Luckily all footage only just caught a slight glimpse of it out of shot with the Marshall being torn apart. His clothes ripped right off.
